Ola Dubh (or "Black Oil") is so named because it is gloopy and viscous. This limited release has been matured in casks from Orkney’s award-winning Highland Park distillery to add complimentary whisky notes to what is already an amazing brew. It is chocolatey with a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste. Special Reserve 18, whisky notes: Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was named Best Spirit in the World by F. Paul Pacult; it offers toffee sweetness, almond nuttiness and a prolonged, smoky aftertaste.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 Pours a dark but translucent brown with a small foamy brown head. Smells rich and fruity. From this bear i would expect more of that oaken caramel smell. Has a fruity raisen like taste with that very modest sour taste i have come to know from several Scottish beers. Just like the smell their isnt quit enough oak and caramel taste to meet my expectations. Overall a very good beer but not as good as the ratings suggest.

It pours black with a dark brown head which is tightly packed and small. It has aromas of whiskey, nutty, dried fruit, and vinous, It has a smokey malt flavor with whiskey and nut flavors. There are also flavors of dried fruit and a vinous characteristic. The roasted malts are the most prominent in the beginning rounding out with whiskey and dried fruit in the middle with the vinous coming towards the end. The whiskey flavors compliment the malts without being overly dominate. It has a moderately high feel to it with a bitter finish.

0,33l bottle at home as part of Euro Local Swap courtesy of minutemat, big thanks. Bottled 09/2014, BB 09/2017. black color, small coffee-colored head. smells smoky, licorice, spices, caramel, some alcohol, light notes of charcoal, some chocolate, peat. nice smell, like always, peat notes dont improve a beer a.k.a -> without it would get a higher score. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes malty sweet, rather obvious peat again, spices, some wood, some alcohol, lightly smoky, earthy, notes from the whisky, licorice, some roast. finishes with light alcohol, peat and licorice. good stuff, peat notes are a bit distracting on the smell but well enough integrated on the taste so not too distract. overall quite nice and complex.

Correct.

(Harviestoun Ola Dubh (18 Year Old)) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV8% Totally black in colour with more beige foam on top than the two previous versions I had. Aroma is not much different than the 16, chocolate, whiskey notes, iodium, prunes. More whiskey on the taste though, chocolate, roasted malts, coal, mildly sweet. Medium body, soft carbonation. Very good but not many differences if any, between this and the 16 years.

Pours black with tan head. Viscous... aroma is rich, smoky, touch of caramel. Smoke persists in taste, burnt sugar and umami (?) Coming through. Palate is thick and cloying. Overall an awesome beer.

Thick beige head over brown-shot black beer, pouring viscously. Wild mushrooms, roast, whisky, Diesel, and strangely, fresh malt. Chocolate, whisky, old wood, faintly smoked. Some meatesters; sweet with just a touch of roast/burnt flavours, ever so faintly phenolic - great balance. Rich, voluptuous feel, yet not thick. Long lasting flavours. Another superv oil change.

Black color with tan head. Aroma is malty and fruity, a bit wood. Taste is beautifully balanced between malts, fruits and wood. Soft carbonation, still slightly ticklish. Beautiful. Even a bit better than the 16er. Whoa! Amazing stuff.
