Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

330 ml bottle. Pitch black colour. Medium-sized off-white head. Vanilla and roasted aromas. Rounded malty flavours. Rich. Smooth carbonation. Dry wooden oaky flavours. Hints of whisky. Finishes dry with a light hop bitterness that lasts a long time. Hints of coffee in the finish. Quite sweet.

Appearance: Opaque, dark brown body capped by a small, bubbly, tan-hued head. Smell: Wafts of smoke and spirits with a scent of dark malts and minor notes of old wood and peat contributed from the barrel aging. Taste: Earthy, smoky chocolate flavor with not more than a hint of malt sweetness. Fire-charred dark fruits. Exceptionally drying wood component with, regrettably, only a thin taste of peaty scotch. Minor return of the dark malts, but they’ve got to contend with the unceasingly wooden taste. Dash of still mineral water. Finishes dry and somewhat abrupt. Mouthfeel: As with the bottle of 12-Year I had previous, the beer just doesn’t quite reach medium-bodied. Medium-low, soft carbonation. A tad lifeless. Drinkability: Not unpleasant, but, for me, it comes up a bit short in terms of both body and flavor. The only really stirring part of the Ola Dubh experience is the jarring price tag.

Bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, whiskey, oaky vanilla, and some light smoke. Flavor was complex and well blended with roasted malts, vanilla, whiskey, chocolate, oak, and some faint smoke with a medium body and a dry roasted finish. AWESOME BREW.

Smells like a good aged balsamic vinegar and ground coffee. Taste is flat and roasty. Very thin in the mouth. Pretty interesting but would not buy again.

Bottle 23747, dated Sept 2007. Pours black with orange edges and thin tan head. The aroma is light peat smoke, chocolate, vanilla, oak, and some light coffee and cherry notes. The flavor is semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla, toasted oak, very light peat, and lots of mellow fruity tones. The Scotch character is obvious, but not at all overwhelming. This has got to be one of the most balanced whisky-barrel beers I’ve had. The finish is lightly floral coffee with a fresh Scotch aftertaste. Very well done.

Almost to full and creamy a head for the kind of beer, near black body. Good but quite strange, both nose and body has clear whiskey cask sharper notes but tons of soft milk chocolate and creamy caramel aromas makes at least the nose a little strange and unfinished, to body is very similar to caramel soft with little interest, some iodine notes that are more present in the beer the in the straight Highland Park appear in finish. I think this is an alright drink, but I think the chosen beer for the cask is wrong some much more interesting should have come out of this "experiment".
