Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Thanks to Paul for sharing! Pours an inky black with no head. Strong oak and molasses aroma that’s heavy on the alcohol. Some fig, rum and raisin notes as well. Thick and chewy in the mouth. Lots of chocolate and oak with amazing depth and complexity of character. Incredibly oaky and strong tasty with an aftertaste like a fine whisky. I never would have guessed the ABV was only 8%. This is really a treat, a great sipper, and possibly the perfect nightcap.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours thick with a dark brown body and a head that goes. Aroma of prunees, chocolate, whiskey, maple and smoke. Taste is smokey with wood, dark fruits, vanilla, figs and brandy. Creamy mouthfeel with light carbonation.

Bottle which Daniel bought me for my birthday in August. 2007 bottle. This one looks identical to the other 2 beers which are all the same thing anyway. Smell has a little more smoked peat in it, perhaps too much. Earthy, some chocolate, peat, and a little bit of oak from the barrel in the smell. The taste is close to the same, however the scotch persists through a little bit more on this one than the others. While I am a scotch drinker, I dont believe this beer is as good as the others. The scotch almost overwhelms the beer. An interesting concept, but they should have stopped with the 12 and 16. Oh well, at least it was drinkable. Would be good with a cigar probably.

not a fan of scotch, but this brew was great. aroma was scotch, which isnt a bad scent. flavor was smooth, but was enjoyable. If scotch tasted this way, i would drink it all the time. Great beer

Bottle from Stateline, #08171, 2007. Color was dark brown, thin head. The aroma was lots of vanilla on opening, some whiskey with whiskey. Flavor followed the aroma, vanilla, oak, whiskey, finishing each sip with some smoke. Pretty smooth, lots of overwhelming vanilla and whiskey notes, though, a little too much, yet decent. The mouthfeel was moderate and smooth, some grainy-silkiness.

Smells great, with a rich array of scotch and wood. the look is completely dark without transparent. taste doesn’t seem outstanding there with a bit of over carbonation for this type of beer.
