Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Taste 8/8 (Bottle#09344/Sept.07) Looks: Black with no head, just a few tan bubbles. Aroma: Very aromatic. Wood cask, smoke/bacon. Roast. Taste: Very smooth and medium bodied. Nice smoke with a little mocha, cask presenting at the end. Small hint of fruit. Big taste. Very little carbonation. I’m a fan of scotch and paired this beer with some Balvenie. It was a nice sipping combination.

Tap @ O’briens for a bargain at $8/10oz. Poured black with a creamy tan head. Strong whisky aroma with a good balance of sweet roasted malt and a hint of coffee. Great mix of whisky and sweet milk chocolate. This is yummy. Silky medium bodied. Much better than I had expected. Decent wamrth.

33 cl, bottle # 09386, Sept 07. Another opaque black pour with the creamiest, inch thick head this side of nitro. Aroma is smoky, piquant hickory with caramel, vanilla and cocoa. Flavor is smoky hickory, caramel, vanilla and milk chocolate turning to sherry and cured tobacco. Medium-heavy body is smooth, sticky, and slightly drying on the finish. If this (and the other O. D.s) weren’t so expensive I could drink it till I drowned.

draft @ uber - 4 oz. pour; thought i had missed this treat from the 2nd anniversary festivities; dark, black cola with thin tan head; smells like a shot of whiskey that was camped out next to a campfire; the smoke seems to smooth it out and doesn’t overwhelm in any way; tastes much stronger than 8%; lots of oak and smoking malts; pretty tasty; interested to see how the bottle i have (thank again pepsican!!) ages

Bought Eons ago it seems @ PP Bottle shop shared with dalekliz, bikesandbeer and my gf cyn. Pours black with a 1 finger tan head more like a ring. Nose is very fragrant with mostly an oily nose, note really a big scotch nose or maybe my nose is broken. Taste is sweet and rich and super malty. There is certainly some scotch in here and clearly some smoke.

Draught at Uber Tavern. Aroma is pretty strong with lots of whiskey, peat, some earth and some sweet dark malts. Pours a dark brown with a thin head. Dark malt sweetness is accompanied by a strong whiskey aspect that is strongly peaty, boozy, and oaky. The whiskey works well with the dark malt and creates and incredibly enjoyabe sipper. Very good.

11.2 oz bottle. Dark brown with some lacy tan froth. Nose is mocha and whiskey, oak and dark roast. Medium light with a tingle; almost refreshing. Taste is chocolate caramel, smoke and plum with a dry, peaty, whiskey-barrel finish. A nice sweetness works well with the booze notes.
