Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Waited over a year for this one- cellaring since Aug 08. Just felt like opening it tonight, a cool fall Friday after a really long week at work. Pours coffee black with a tan cappucino head. Aroma of prunes and licorice. Viscous stout taste- like an Imperial Russian. Chocolate notes and dark roasted malts. Slowly a faint whisky burn grows in the back of my palate, then fades. As the beer warms slightly, the body thins out. Neither the malts nor the whisky come all the way through- falls a touch short of the $13.00 I paid for this 11.2 oz bottle. Was expecting something more- in my opinion the 30-year barrel aging doesn’t add much to the beer other than price. Goose Island Bourbon County Stout is still my barrel-aged benchmark.

Thick brown with a powerful cream tan head. Aroma is smooth chocolate, light whiskey smoke, big maltiness, roast. Taste is again, pure smooth chocolate, oily maltiness, light smoke and wood. Lovely stuff.

so much better than the 12...alot smoother and better blended in the flavors between the beer and the whiskey...same flavors, wood, whiskey, burnt, and chocolate with hints of molasses and anise, but everything about this one is more enjoyable.

Bottle #06291. Dark brown with a thin lid of tiny tan bubbles. Scents of molasses, licorice, soy sauce, along with hints of oak and bourbon (not really catching the whisky). Flavor is like a shot of whisky followed by coal and oak. Seems thin and quick to me.

330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Bottle No. 01232, March 2009. ABV is 8.0%. Pitch black colour, big tan head. Strong aroma of whisky cask, notes of peat, tar and vanilla. Intense but well rounded flavour of malt whisky, oak, malty sweetness, coffee and tar. Moderately bitter aftertaste.

From a bottle poured black with a very small head. Nice sweet malty flavor with a little bit of scotch aftertaste.

On tap at Coles in Buffalo. Pours ink black in a 7oz. snifter. No head, no carbonation. This doesn’t really have lacing but rather "legs" to use a wine term. Aroma of chocolate, cherry, wine with some nice caramel, scotch notes. Smooth oily textured thin mouthfeel. Great roasted malty, dark fruits flavor. Slight scotch taste as it warmed. Long lasting flavor. Alcohol isn’t noticeable. Really great beer. Glad I got the chance to try this one.

Bottle. Black with a small beige head. Aromas are peat with lots of marzipan. Whisky grain and oak with soft spices and chocolate. Flavours are tangy dark chocolate with vinous red wine. Smoky and oily with marzipan and lots of vanilla. Spicy and peppery with warming alcohol. Very good.
