Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Bottle No. 06175 and dated Sept 2007. Tan small head that mostly endured, splotchy lacing, opaque, no carbonation observed, and a black hue. The aroma was dark fruits, malt, wood, some licorice, and whiskey. The flavor was malt, roasty, chocolate, whiskey, and earthy. Tingly mouthfeel and medium bodied. A tasty beer, but not as good as the 12 and 16 versions IMO. Still, worthy of a try.

On tap: The aroma consists of whiskey, chocolate, vanilla, and faint coffee. A little too much whiskey. Dark brown with no transparency and a small off-white head that quickly fades to a ring. The flavor starts with moderate chocolate with light vanilla in the background. Lots of whiskey in the finish with some light coffee. Just a tad too much whiskey in the flavor for me. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Motor oil pour (if only a touch thinner). The aroma is malt with peat. Boozy. The flavor is fine. Peat (of which I am usually not a fan but fine pleasing in this brew), dark roasted malt, hints of unsweet chocolate are what come to mind, but this is primarily peat, roast and booze. I like it. The mouth feel is outstandingly smooth. Wow. All and all this is a very interesting and enjoyable brew. I would not go so far as to say it is excellent, but it is certainly something you should try. I would get it again. I’ve adjusted my overall score as my usual rating systme gave this a 4.2. While I think this is good, I would not say it is 4.2 good.

On Tap @ Hamilton’s Tavern S.D. Pours a deep brown mahogany with a small beige head. Lots of dark fruit and chocolate on the nose. Flavors of Plums, cherries, chocolate, smoke and bourbon were dominate. Paid $20 for a pint.....ouch!!

Bottle (330ml) shared with HogTownHarry, tupalev & garthicus -- courtesy of gunhaver. Bottle No: 03289. Pours a very deep ruby-brown with a small diminishing frothy tan head. Aroma’s malty along with oak, dark fruit, peat an chocolate. Nice earthy, sweet, malty flavour along with peat, oak and chocolate -- so easy to drink! Alcohol’s well hidden. Fantastic stuff -- thanks gunhaver!

A near perfect old ale. Aroma of stale chocolate, and vinious dark malt. Pour was a nice near black with a thin off white ring for a head, Taste was strong and drinkable. Heavy strong roasted malt with a hint of black licorice and a heavy chocolate backbone. A nice underlying carbonated chocolate malt comes in and out. Thanks Mr_Stiitch!

almost no light can pass through this jet black used motor oil. No head no carb no problem. On tap and way to cold so i have to wait. Sweet scotch vanilla and blackness. A bit thinner than expected whisky and rich dark malt. Lingering finish.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and Garthicus, courtesy of Blankboy. Thick black with very little head - love the look of this oily beast. Earthy aroma, sweet. Great peat/earth taste, very sweet, acidic boozy finish. Very nice and complex -a great sipper.
