Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

On tap at Newport Pizza and Ale, compliments of John Henry. Pours a nice rich syrupy ruby amber - brown with a nice velvety creamy head. Aroma is very rich and intense, but nothing is too overpowering or sharp- good subdued whiskey, light oakiness and vanilla, some hints of tar and leather with nice fruity esters and smooth sweet malts. Flavor is also lightly fruity with hintsof tar, tobacco, and nice single malt whiskey with an earthy cigar character but itwas smooth and refined. This was really good.

Bottle shared by Eric. Pours a dark brown body with a thin beige head. The aroma is like a thick slice of peat cut after a downpour; earthy and strong. The taste was not that balanced, but it was really well made and very nice. There was a smooth and enjoyable palate with strong wood and peat flavors, also some sweetness and a lightly toasted malt. I really respect what this company is doing with the traceable casks and this beer is really a well crafted work of art.

On tap at Ashley’s - Ann Arbor, MI. A lightly charred nose, backed with some peat alcohol and light chocolate. Pours a dark black mahogany with a tan fringe. Texture immediately develops as oily, backed with well-integrated Scotch alcohols and cherries. Oak comes out with charred inner-barrel. Malt characters seemed pushed to the back, but they work as a good palate for the barrel character, although some balance might be appreciated. There’s definitely some raw peat smoke notes in this beer. It’s got a good barrel flavor. I’m surprised I like the piquant touch of scotch in this beer, it works. A good barrel use. The sugars are chewy, granular and bit sweet, but needed to work with the barrel. Alcohol is not overwhelming, to my palate. Interesting.

Pours jet black with a beautiful brown, creamy head. Nose is an amazing scotch with caramel and a deep roasted malt, almost wood smell. Very smooth body. The oak and scotch over-lay the entire beer with the base being chocolate and thick roasted caramel malts. Age brings an extreme smoothness with no sharp flavors at all. Very warming with no hints of the 8% ABV.

pours a pitch black color with almost no head. aroma is funky, earthy, mold saturated rotten wood. flavor is of campfire marshmallows, burnt fire wood, and toast. one of the most smooth, velvety and complex palates ever. medium bodied. i can’t think of a better campfire beer. this stuff rocks.

The flavor points are largely out of respect. Bottle from the 7-11 on Figueroa and 52nd - Highland Park, CA. This is neither an easy beer to drink nor enjoy (only because of the specific mood you have to be in to enjoy it). Watching ’There Will Be Blood’ definitely helps the experience. Taste-wise, this is absolutely like licking a used grill. Absurdly smokey, ueber-roasted. Like barbecue beef, extra char, hold the beef. I couldn’t even taste the barrell in this one, which flabbergasts me. A monument to Rauchbiere.

Bottle (number 06636). Blackish beer with reddish/brown highlights. Brown head. Chocolate, vanilla, oak, caramel aroma. Toffee, vanilla, light whiskey, light peat flavor. Medium-plus bodied. Chocolate, light peat, vanilla and toffee linger. Nice complexity. More refined and balanced than the 12 and 16.

Cask at Spuyten Duyvil: Dark pour-near opaque body topped by a light brown ring. The nose has some cedar, oak, tannins, smoked apple-wood and very mild dark cocoa. Very elegant nose. Has a nice slick and smooth texture. Flavor is very complex. Has a perfect oak presence throughout. Mildly roasted with dark chocolate undertones. Smooth woody/oak and lightly sweet tobacco notes. The oak is present throughout the entire palate and into the smooth finish. Smooth, complex and balanced. A very elegant Old Ale.
