Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

On tap at Newport Pizza and Ales in OB, San Diego, CA--Wow! Midnight black body with a swirly and bubbly beige and gray head. Bourbon, wooden nose that jumps out. Good level of carbonation. Dry, boozy, and clean. Smoky tobacco notes. Assertive and delectable!

I’ve read the story on the Ola Dubh series, its a novel idea. The 30 Year Old version poured black, thick bodied, with malts being merged with the scotch and oak from the barrels. I think of British breweries of being rigid and not trying new styles like the US craft brewers tend to do. Harvleston with some prompting by its US importer has gone out on a limb to produce a wonderful Old Ale. Sampled @ the Flat Rock Saloon in Manyunk, Philadelphia.

Draft from Capital Ale House. Almost dead black with a small dark head. Pitch, peat, dark roast malts, and scotch dominate aroma. Complex peaty flavor with dark roast malts, raisin, and some alchohol warming. Medium mouthfeel with a fair amount of carbonation. Long lingering finish that is smoky with scotch and some bitternes. Very nice complex sipping beer.

Bottle courtesy of goryshkewych: Poured a deep pitch-black color ale with a medium light brown foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with distinctive notes of scotch. Taste is a well balance mix between some sweet malt with some notes of scotch with a creamy like texture. The chocolate notes of the regular Old Engine Oil beer are still present. Full creamy body with some good carbonation and no discernable alcohol. I would say that this was good but I would have expected more scotch presence and I am not sure that this is a staple considering the price tag.

Cask shared at Spuyten. Black pour with some brown film. Aroma is not too strong, some sweet chocolate, fruit, and alcohol. Flavor is nicely balanced, vanilla, roast, sweet and bitter chocolate, fruit, and some bittering hops in the finish. Soft palate.

Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is strong of whiskey with some roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, oak, alcohol, and some dark fruits. Flavor is strong of oak and whiskey up front with underlining notes of chocolate, roasted malts, and dark fruits. Decent bitter finish with a little warming. Very delicious.

Poured black with a minimal bubbly head that dissipated immediately leaving no lacing. Whiskey was very evident in the smell with a bit of chocolate, caramel and vanilla. Mostly scotch. Chocolate comes through in the taste with the whiskey actually a little less evident than in the smell. This was fairly light for the style though very smooth. Creamy with very little carbonation and a boozy scotch aftertaste. This was decent for an old ale though a bit on the light side. The scotch certainly added a nice complexity to it.

Dark brown with a smaller tan head. Nose is more bourbon based than the 12 or 16. Lots of woody barrel type notes. Still, the smokey flavor works well with the bourbon and the malts. More caramel sweetness and toffee notes than before. Takes a runner-up finish to the 16yo.
