Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Tasted on tap. Black with a medium brown head. Aroma reveals subtle scotch notes, peat, iodine. The flavor is all dark chocolate with a smokey charcoal edge.

Bottle. Number 05815 from Sept 2007. Black pour with a short foamy tan head. Aroma is big peat and iodine, burnt wood, sea salt, roasted malt, and hints of chocolate. Taste is peat, smoky wood, treacle, iodine, light salty notes, roasted malt, hints of chocolate, and whisky. Touch more alcohol taste in this one than in previous iterations. Body is chewy and creamy with a medium overall feel. Finish is more iodine and peat notes, soft alcohol, treacle, roasted malt, burnt timber and hints of chili pepper. Very tasty stuff!

On freaking tap at Manderes in Folsom. What a treat! I’ve had a few of the Ola Dubhs in the bottle before but didn’t rate them. This pours jet black with an off white head that thins after a few minutes but leaves thick lacing on the sides of the glass. Nose isn’t as thick as I expected but is roasty and woody for sure. Flavor is balanced and not overpowering. Not chewey at all, very drinkable, although a little more body would have been fine. I was expecting the characteristics of a big imperial stout but this more resembles an aged porter. Taste is roasted malt, peat smoke, and whisky. My glass might be a little cold and I am finding the flavors open up as it warms slightly. Very good.

Wasn’t nearly as impressed w/ the 12 as this. While carbonation is very slight, the nuanced addition of what I took as some over none made a world of difference to me. And along with that was the manner in which the barrel aging worked in a very cohesive fashion leaving me extremely pleased. Beyond a sigh of relief to one of great pleasure.

(Bottled) Almost black with a partly lasting, beige head. Very intense, dry aroma with tannins and woody whisky barrel, along with slightly boozy alcohol. Flavor is very malty, but the sweetness is well balanced by the woody whisky barrel with vanilla, tar, and smoke. Also some licorice and black coffee. Full-bodied and slightly oily palate with not too much thickness, and - thanks to reasonable ABV - also nice drinkability. Very interesting and balanced package overall. Could be drank quite quickly, if it wasn’t as pricey as it is.

Bottled, Beer Hunters (#03519, Mar 2009). Opaque black/brown color with small brown head. Oak, whisky, some vanilla and licorice in the nose. Flavor is roasted, it has tobacco ash and licorice with vanilla. Very dry mouthfeel. Vanilla and oak are dominating the aftertaste. Balanced flavors, perhaps just a bit too carbonated. Sampled side by side with Ola Dubh 40.

Pours dark in color with thin tan head. The aroma is rich and inviting. I can draw on this all night long. I get rich earthiness mixing with caramel, a bit of smokiness and sticky grape jam. Wow! Smells just like yum. The taste has a peat note that must be what seemed like smoke and earthiness in the nose. I also get a bit of a distinctive smoke note to go along with roasted malts, chocolate, a hint of wood and dark fruity goodness. Wow, smooth and very very nice.

Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Smells of cherries, oak, roasted malt. Tastes of molasses, oak, pepper, spice, some fruit. Full bodied and enjoyable.
