Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Wish I had done the 3 of these side by side, but just did not find the opportunity. I found the 16yr to come across the best of the 3, but that was by notes, a side by side would have been top notch. Big thick and sticky pour. Notes of roasted malt, liqour, smoke, vanilla and coffee. Nothing to amaze, especially for the price tag that came along with it.

Sampled at the Alexi TN distributor’s tasting; thanks Jim Bird! Tasted alongside the 12 and 16 year. All poured a very dark brown with a very small dark tan head. Roasty, hammy and creamy smooth. Just a little spicier and creamier than the other two. Pretty tasty stuff, the best of the three I thought, just way too expensive.

Bottle, at Bellport Beer. I was lucky enough to walk in at the right time. Dave & another customer shared it with me. We drank it right off the shelf at room temperature. Wonderful aroma. Chocolate, whiskey, malt, sweet. Smokey, malty, sweet caramel flavors. Absolutely a top notch beer. I took one home to savor!

A thick, heavy beer.Tons of malt, and no perceivalbe hops here. Appropriate level of alcohol, it is perceivable, but there is not too much of it. Flavor of roasted meat, smoke, and earth. An exceptional beer.

Bottle poured a nearly opaque black with a lasting brown head. Aromas of scotch, peat smoke, earthiness, roasted malt, pepper and bitter chocolate. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of bitter chocolate, peat smoke, earthiness, oak, roasted malt, light scotch and a hint of licorice with a smooth lingering roasty smokey finish.

Appearance: Jet brown with a trace of white at the top. Aroma: Vanilla, and a touch of wood and booze. As it got to room temperature, I smelled milk chocolate. Taste: wood, peaty malt, chocolate and a dash of whiskey. Mouthfeel: Thin Overall: Very balanced, with unique flavors.
