Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

Pours solid black with a tan head. Deep roast and chocolate aroma. Smooth bourbon texture with bourbony flavor and dark choc. Great balance between sweetness and rich oak/bourbon flavors.

Draft. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet malty combined with notes of hard roasted malt, whiskey, and wood, as well as light notes of smoke. The flavor is very powerful with strong notes of whiskey as well as medium notes of hard roasted malt, and a bit of smoke. Nice - reminds me of the Paradox beer - no wonder.

MMMmmmm, hmmm! Got this bottle at Sam’s in Chi. Really interesting how this differs from the 12 & 16. Opaque like the 16, more aroma and going on than the 16, but not as coarse (& the 12 isn’t coarse at all - relative) as the 12. Much more silky. Divine. Peaty, malty, roasty in the nose. Boozy again. Opulent. Rich and sort of bitter. Excellent beer. Not a session tho.

Bottle. This beer was better than the 12 year old. However i don’t believe worth the difference in price. But that doesn’t mean i won’t try the other two versions.

Wish I had done the 3 of these side by side, but just did not find the opportunity. I found the 16yr to come across the best of the 3, but that was by notes, a side by side would have been top notch. Big thick and sticky pour. Notes of roasted malt, liqour, smoke, vanilla and coffee. Nothing to amaze, especially for the price tag that came along with it.

Sampled at the Alexi TN distributor’s tasting; thanks Jim Bird! Tasted alongside the 12 and 16 year. All poured a very dark brown with a very small dark tan head. Roasty, hammy and creamy smooth. Just a little spicier and creamier than the other two. Pretty tasty stuff, the best of the three I thought, just way too expensive.

Bottle, at Bellport Beer. I was lucky enough to walk in at the right time. Dave & another customer shared it with me. We drank it right off the shelf at room temperature. Wonderful aroma. Chocolate, whiskey, malt, sweet. Smokey, malty, sweet caramel flavors. Absolutely a top notch beer. I took one home to savor!
