Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

I’ve read the story on the Ola Dubh series, its a novel idea. The 30 Year Old version poured black, thick bodied, with malts being merged with the scotch and oak from the barrels. I think of British breweries of being rigid and not trying new styles like the US craft brewers tend to do. Harvleston with some prompting by its US importer has gone out on a limb to produce a wonderful Old Ale. Sampled @ the Flat Rock Saloon in Manyunk, Philadelphia.

Bottle (number 06636). Blackish beer with reddish/brown highlights. Brown head. Chocolate, vanilla, oak, caramel aroma. Toffee, vanilla, light whiskey, light peat flavor. Medium-plus bodied. Chocolate, light peat, vanilla and toffee linger. Nice complexity. More refined and balanced than the 12 and 16.

I’m not sure if there’s a whole lot of difference in the three beers because I didn’t get the 30 year at the same time I tasted the other two back to back. There is a nice aroma of high quality dark chocolate, like the high percentage cacao stuff that tastes slightly winey, and dark berries. The whisky is strong in the aroma, but not too overpowering for the beer. Enjoyable.

Wasn’t nearly as impressed w/ the 12 as this. While carbonation is very slight, the nuanced addition of what I took as some over none made a world of difference to me. And along with that was the manner in which the barrel aging worked in a very cohesive fashion leaving me extremely pleased. Beyond a sigh of relief to one of great pleasure.

A deep dark stout with a thin liht moka head. Vanilla beans and Brett in aroma, with light alcohol gin, chocolate. In mouth, loads of licorice, bitter chocolate, soothing alcohol and wine tannins. Very interesting and complex. On cask at Blind Tiger, NYC, May 30 2008.

Bottle No. 06175 and dated Sept 2007. Tan small head that mostly endured, splotchy lacing, opaque, no carbonation observed, and a black hue. The aroma was dark fruits, malt, wood, some licorice, and whiskey. The flavor was malt, roasty, chocolate, whiskey, and earthy. Tingly mouthfeel and medium bodied. A tasty beer, but not as good as the 12 and 16 versions IMO. Still, worthy of a try.

Drank as a vertical of 12, 16, and 30: Pour is opaque black with a thin sticky tan head...smell is roasty chocolate and vanilla with hints of smoke....strongly sweet and roasty flavor with lots of vanilla...not smoke put a vegetal peaty flavor towards the finish....

Bottle # 16156 and enjoyed in my NB worthy glass: Extremely oily appearance with a mostly fading head and long legs. The aroma is very earthy and oxidized with heavy dark fruits and malts up front. The charred wood, liquorice and peat are more noticeable in the 30 y.o. expression but then the tannins and nutty "porter" aspects are more muted.

The flavor profile is the most mellow in this version, it is the one most like a true English Olde Ale minus the noticeable iodine and peat notes upon the finish. Much like the 30 year old Highland Park Scotch, this brew is simply too refined and mellow for it’s own good. Some of the character has gone to to the Angels and not to the Ratebeerian. That said, this is still quite a fine beer and it not for the price then it would be something I would stock a ton of in my cellar.
