Commercial Description:
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the rest with genuine provenance. Ola Dubh will initially be available in three different expressions; the initial release will be of small batches aged in casks formerly used to mature Highland Park 12 Year Old, Highland Park 16 Year Old and Highland Park 30 Year Old. Further variants are planned for the future. Ola Dubh is, in the words of beer afficionado Owen D.L. Barstow: “The most interesting new British beer I have tried in years.”

from liar’s club. black with a brown head. Chocolate porter aroma. Great and well balanced taste between the chocolate and scotch. Definately the best of the three.

Pour was very dark and rich with little head. Aroma was a little less potent with whiskey and oak. I think the 30 year barrel aged scotch took most of the oak character with it. Give this, the oak was much less in this brew but the chocolate and cocoanut characters were much more dominant. The scotch and whiskey characters were also more mellow and smooth. Another damn good brew but probably not worth twice the price of the 12 or 16. Would drink again but would not pay the price of $17 for a 12 oz. bottle.

Pitch Black pour. Beautiful three finger brown head which leaves a sticky lacing. Amazing chocolate flavor, oily and bittersweet to the tongue. Hints of cocoa with a light smokey tobacco flavor. AND YES, an amazing delicious scotch aftertaste. I have had the pleasure of sipping highland park scotch, so I can definetely taste notes of it in this fine brew. BRAVO!!!

Bottle #3290 poured into a snifter. Completely black with a one-finger mocha head, just like the 12 and 16. Little lacing. Aroma is of pungent chocolate with a noticeably hotter whiskey note than in the 12 or 16. Peat and wood are there, slightly stronger than the 16. Tastes like what rauchcoffee would taste like if it existed. The smoke lingers through the finish, which showcases the peat and woody tannins from the aroma. The aftertaste is similar to the bitterness of dark chocolate but without the sweetness. Despite all the flavor notes imparted by the whiskey barrels, actual whiskey itself really isn’t anywhere to be found in this beer. No sign of the 8% abv or any scotchy hotness. Nice balance and complexity. Mouthfeel is just a little thicker than the 12 and 16, but it still isn’t rich enough to make it a world class beer. It does however help the drinkability. I love the woody, roasty, dry finish and how it really makes you yearn for the next sip.

This beer is thick. Pours pitch black and oily, smells like a leather couch in a 19th century smoking room (in a good way) nice subtle hints of scotch, malt, leather, a good cigar; there’ a lot going on here. Flavor is more of the same. I wanted to hold it in my mouth for a long time to get all the subtle stuff going on. This was a really nice beer. I had the 16 year old variant and for as good as that was, this is much better.

Bottle, thanks Beachbum25!!!!! Thrilling tasting of all three Ola Dubs. This is the best. Rich and thick on the palate, fairly small light brown head. Flavors are scotch, wood, charcoal, coffee and chocolate. Nice brew for sure. Thanks again to Beachbum25 for a kick ass trade!!

Bottle, at Bellport Beer. I was lucky enough to walk in at the right time. Dave & another customer shared it with me. We drank it right off the shelf at room temperature. Wonderful aroma. Chocolate, whiskey, malt, sweet. Smokey, malty, sweet caramel flavors. Absolutely a top notch beer. I took one home to savor!
