COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the first with genuine provenance. This version is aged in Highland Park 40 Year whisky casks.

11.2oz bottle in a snifter. Opened with a bourbon scent from the bottle. Poured an opaque black with a dense tan head - very attractive. Aroma is unmistakably bourbon - strong alcohol character, toasty chocolate and vanilla. Ends with some slightly bitter and oaky molasses. Taste is very heavy with a slight bitter or sour. Body is full and creamy with a light carbonation - almost flat. Overall, this is an amazing example of a stout. It is expensive at $15-$20 USD for a 330ml bottle but well worth it if you like stouts.

330 ml bottle into snifter; bottle #26077, bottled in 8/2010. Pours fairly pitch black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, molasses, dark bread, vanilla, oak, raisin, plum, fig, peat smoke, leather, tobacco, and oak/peat earthiness. Incredible complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and whiskey cask notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, toffee, dark bread, molasses, vanilla, oak, raisin, plum, fig, peat smoke, leather, tobacco, and roast/peat earthiness. Slight roast/oak bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, vanilla, toffee, oak, dark fruit, peat smoke, leather, tobacco, and oak/peat earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and whiskey cask flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding old ale! All around awesome complexity and balance of dark/bready malts and whiskey cask flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

McNeillR (1325) - SCOTLAND - NOV 28, 2014
Dark stern brown, decent ringed head. Fairly swift balsamic nose as it warmed but steamy choc and whisky later but slims out in the initial taste. Rich, nuttier and a more vibrant oakier punch. Not quite as vibrant as the others but smoother pulse on the mouthfeel. Little bit of almost silent tart towards the finish.

330ml bottle purchased at the LCBO in Peterborough, Ontario. Near black in colour, very small brown head, no lacing. Aroma is heavy on the alcohol, bourbon, some sweetness, malty. Flavour is surprisingly thin, highly alcoholic, a little harsh, lots of oak, dark chocolate. Hot mouthfeel, light body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long and quite warm, a bit thin. Just can’t get over the amount of alcohol in this. A waste of money really.

another winner in this series. best of the bunch. i’m between a 4.4 and a 4.5, but will go low til i have it again...and i will have it again. smokey peet almost undetectable at first, but as it warms, whiskey booziness takes over from the super chocolate, malty, robust goodness, and manages to do so without the slightest hint of heat or alcohol. well done! 7/11 - 2nd times a charm...still the best in the line."

digopossobon (296) - MACAE, BRAZIL - SEP 20, 2014
Garrafa numerada 27328. Safra de agosto de 2010. Aroma intenso. Perceptível a distância. Adocicado. Pão. Malte. Álcool. Madeira. Caramelo. Frutas vermelhas.

Bottle from Erzbierschof - Black color with a small creamy tan head, good lasting, small lacing - Aroma of whisky, vanilla, oak, malty, hints of soy sauce - Flavor of roasted malt, coffee, whisky, dark cherry, licorice and spicy - Full body, smooth, light carbonation, roasted malt okay whisky spicy finish - all the interest of this beer come from the barrel, well balanced, delicious, this one is little bit dryer than other in the series
