Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the first with genuine provenance. This version is aged in Highland Park 40 Year whisky casks.

Bottle. Black and opague. Cream, ash and peated malt in the aroma. Initial chocolate overpowered by licorice, peat and whisky. Full bodied. Creamy mouthfeel. Ash and pipe tobacco. Some warming alcohol. Lovely!

Jet black, tiny head only when poured from a height, but at least the ring stayed for a while then. Softly whiskyish woody aroma. Beautifully soft palate, very gently carbonated. Massively mellow - so well balanced, the dry woodiness is just perfect. Alcohol completely in check.

Appearance: black, scant head
Aroma: big roasted and scotch aroma, touch of sweetness offset by an earthyness
Flavor: big scotch flavor, lots of complementary roasted malt, plenty of alcohol adds a spicy peppery character that melds well with the scotch, enough sweetness from the alcohol and dark caramel to keep it balanced, finishes hot and roasty with the scotch and roast in perfect harmony

UPDATED: APR 12, 2013 33cl bottle (#10960) shared with Dutchdrebus. Pitch black color with a small light brown head. Smell malts, whisky, some wood and roastyness. Taste malts, lightly roastyness, lightly whisky and wood, slightly alcohol in the finish. A bit thin texture, medium body, medium carbo. Not as good as expected. Re-rate without a full comment. Loved it this time. Original rating: 7-3-7-3-13.

from Bier-Bienne - dark black beer with no head retention; notes of whisky and wood, pralines and licorice; low carbonation and quite full-bodied; gently sticky and pretty sweet; a late moderate bitterness; long and deep aftertaste of black chocolate, dry and with notes of cacao and whisky - a somptuous dessert beer

Bottle. Thanks Andrew! pours a black color. Best of the Ola Dubs yet! Aroma is smoky, peaty, scotch, chocolate, vanilla and some asphalt. Flavor is peaty and has a lovely combo of scotch, tar and chocolate. Hell yeah I love these beers!

Bottle @ home, via trade with Homer321. Fucken a bro. Thanks! Pours a jet black appearance with a dark brown head. Spicy, a bit sweet chocolate, moderately peaty smoky, smooth aroma. Quite peaty, very herbal campfire smoky, burnt malty, big chocolate, slight piney flavor. Tons of peat, tons of chocolate. Pretty fun beer to drink albeit pretty strong.

Bottle… Pours black with a small, creamy, beige head. Good retention. The bouquet provides dark chocolate, charred-smoky wood and Scotch whiskey - no doubt this was aged in a spicy Highland Park barrel. Nearly full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and prickly carbonation. The flavor is well-balanced and mildly chocolaty; bittersweet and roasty, but not a lot of whiskey flavor. Crisp, burnt, bittersweet finish.
