Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the first with genuine provenance. This version is aged in Highland Park 40 Year whisky casks.

Bottle, bought @ Some Whisky-shop in Edinburgh.
Pours almost all-black with a great, creamy, cappucino head. Nice, elegant aroma. Whiskey, light smoke, chocolate, roasted malts and a touch of coffee. Medium carbonation, lovely creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is really good. Lots of whiskey character, light smokiness. Fat chocolate, light roasted. Really wonderful wood character in the finish. Impressively balanced. Wonderful.

11.2 oz. bottle, pours dark brown / black with a tiny tan head. Aroma is extremely woody, with dry whiskey, burnt malt, and a slight licorice note. Flavour is very dry and woody, with notes of whiskey, dry burnt wood, some licorice, and charred malt. Finishes dry, woody and a bit boozy. Excellent, though I actually prefer the 12, 16 and 18.

from Bier-Bienne - dark black beer with no head retention; notes of whisky and wood, pralines and licorice; low carbonation and quite full-bodied; gently sticky and pretty sweet; a late moderate bitterness; long and deep aftertaste of black chocolate, dry and with notes of cacao and whisky - a somptuous dessert beer

Bottle (#25173, August 2010). Thanks Nick! It pours very dark brown, near black with a thin light tan head. The nose is roasted malt, chocolate, oak, vanilla, light smoke, earth, light whisky and charred wood. The taste is roasted malt, toast, chocolate, mellow whisky, oak, earth, ash, vanilla, warming alcohol, some smoke, liquorice and light iodine with a long dry, roasty finish. Medium-full body and moderate carbonation. Very well balanced. Complex and flavoursome, yet smooth and mellow. Does not disappoint.
