Ola Dubh (or ‘Black Oil’) is a collaboration between Harviestoun Brewery and Highland Park, Distiller of the Year*. It is based on Harviestoun’s award-winning Old Engine Oil. With more than a stylistic nod to the classic Imperial Porters (and Stouts) of the nineteenth century, this deliciously rich, dark, 8% a.b.v. beer is the first ale to be aged in malt whisky casks from a named distillery and, with traceable casks and numbered bottles, the first with genuine provenance. This version is aged in Highland Park 40 Year whisky casks.

The smell is sweet and inviting. Chocolate, coffee, a hint of whiskey and a little licorice. The taste is delicious. In a way this is both complex and simple in taste. One may well conclude that as a compliment to the beer.

Pours deep black with little to no head or carbonation. This didn’t detract from the beer, so smooth. Aroma is big port and wine character with some dark fruit, taste is similar with a smooth and sweet finish.

Bottle # 50271 and served in a Bells Tulip: Pours near pitch black with a small beige head and spotty lace, some oily legs. The aroma is classic Old Engine Oil at first: molasses, toast, Islay scotch like peated earthy esters, smoke, and bakers chocolate but then there is a lovely herbal, floral and grainy low lands scotch tone and an Olde Port red grape vapour as well, BRILLIANT! The taste starts with rich sweet malts, plenty of that sherry like oxidization that really works with British Isle Olde Ales, very earthy and smoky with a light handed peat character. Over ripened fruit and tannic oak rounds the palate, brilliant balance. Absolutely everything I want in a dessert beer, rich and utterly decadent. The mouth feel is soft, round and lush but is not that sticky. Moderate warming on the finish.

Me loved the 16 yo Ola Dubh and liked all the other expression along with my love of basic Old Engine Oil so I approached this knowing it would likely be right up my alley... well it certainly did not disappoint. I could drink this once a week for the rest of life and be one happy human. Did I say, brilliant? Yes it is, X3. I would gladly pay $16 for many more bottles of this.

Smell of coffee and licorice, also some berries. Oily, almost pitch black, no head. Soft carbonation. Taste of wood, overripe berries, then coffee a bit later. Also alcohol and whisky to be noted. Bitter, lightly sweet. Beer doesn’t get too much better than this.

Had this one in-cellar since the summer, trying it as a Happy Birthday to me treat on a cold December night. Pours a solid black, almost Coke-like colour. Head is dark, minimal. Aroma is hardwood smoke, chocolate, almost coffee. Palate is not too thick, initially flavourful with some tingle on the tongue, finished with a rewardingly long aftertaste. Closed my eyes and could sense the whisky working its way through. Taste is the perfect blend of bitter, propelling the roast and toast of the malt to the fore. Overall, a superior beer. Thanks to my wife for the present, well worth the wait till my birthday!

Bottle at barVolo, #471, 2009. Pours a viscous black with a quickly dissipating offwhite head. Smells sweet, with cherry, vanilla, peat and beauty. Tastes of cherry, vanilla, peat, brown sugar and indescribable goodness. Full bodied. Oily texture. Very dry with some rough texture initially with strong peat, but is followed by a wet and sweet wave, finishing again dry but with a lingering sweetness.

Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Very dark brown opaque pour. Huge warm smell. Whisky notes with sweetness and soft chocolate. Also has some coconut on the nose. Warm feeling. Slightly smoked and sweet malts. This is heavy and encompassing. Wow.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a very nice looking dark brown/black with creamy tan head. Aroma of malt, toasted coconut, chocolate and smoke. Flavor, WoW, wood, malt, dark roast, chocolate and smoke, blended very well, very flavorful, signs of whisky as well. Mouth feel is very smooth, heavy body, low carbonation, almost silky. Overall, very good beer!!!

Bottle. Thanks Andrew! pours a black color. Best of the Ola Dubs yet! Aroma is smoky, peaty, scotch, chocolate, vanilla and some asphalt. Flavor is peaty and has a lovely combo of scotch, tar and chocolate. Hell yeah I love these beers!

Really dark, almost black foam. Caramelly, chocolate, coffee and a nice touch of whisky. One of my favorite imperial porters.
