COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered.
Ingredients: Pale malt; Roasted barley; Oats; Washington Galena, Worcester Fuggles and Kent Goldings hops.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Pours an opaque, old engine oil, colour. Aroma of roaster malt, caramel and coffee. Medium body. Nice roasted malt flavour and beautifull mouthfeel. Ay, its a good Scot.

Thick, very dark brown. Smokey nose with hints of molasses and chocolate. Full and creamy on the palate. Slightly bitter-toffee like finish.

Aroma is full of burny chocolate malt, extremely roasted and smokey with coffee and dark chocolate screaming through. Flavor is full of these flavors. Pours just like the name says and finishes with a sweet but not-cloying complex roast finish. I really enjoyed this one.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2005 Dark brown, small head. Malty, roasted, notes of coffee and dark chocolate, a bit dry nose. Medium to full body, smooth. Flavor is malty, roasted, coffee-like, a bit dry and sweet, chocolate-like, moderately bitter, also notes of alcohol. Dry, roasted and long finish. A bit too dry for me, but a pleasant beer overall.

Pours very dark black, with a brown head that flees quickly. Oh, such nice caramel and roast aromas, with small hints of fruit. Again, in the flavor, roast caramel with so much malt. Palate is very smooth with damn nice finish. A very good scottish ale!

Oh, this stuff really was awesome. A great scottish, that really lingers on the porter-ish side, but strong and rich and creamy. Candy bar character throughout, very malty and slightly sweet like carob in the finish.

Very much like a chocolate stout/porter. Strong chocolate malt aroma and flavor with a nice balance of hops on the end. Not necessarily a session beer, but I feel like i can drink this forever.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2008 On tap at the Half-Door in Hartford, CT (a very nice Irish pub with a great beer selection). They said it was a porter, and I tend to agree. Color is black with some reddish and brownish tinges. Medium head. Flavor is mostly of chocolate malt, with great hop balance. Very creamy, rich, and tasty.

Bottled, Pasteurised. Dark red brown with beige fluffy head. Quite gassy for a stout type beer, but once it settles down there is a thick chocolate malt flavour with a bitter coffee afertaste. Powdery dry in the finish with hints of fruit. Scottish Ale my A*!&

I tried, but I really couldn't smell it. Just a bit of dusty, stale cocoa aroma. Mostly clear, rootbeer brown, good old-fashioned label. A little sugary, but not too much. Good bittering balance. Tootsie-roll and semi-sweet chocolate, the brew 'shows a lot of cleavage' in the alcohol department, to stretch a metaphor. Good moderately choco-bitter aftertaste. This really is a splendid brew, especially as it warms.
