Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Pours near-black with almost no head. Aroma is tons of chocolate and roasted malty goodness with some coffee and vinous sweetness. Flavor is on the roasty side, but sweet as well. Hop content is minimal but noticable. Roasted malt comes through quite strongly, as does bitter chocolate. Palate is somewhat thick, but nothing in the realm of an imperial stout. Finish is quite dry. A unique and chocoalty offering for sure.

11.2oz bottle served in a snifter. Poured a deep brown/black with a finger of tan fine bubbled head. Not much in the aroma department, some chocolate and a little fruit. Roasted barley and some malty sweetness. Body was a little thin for a beer that calls itself engine oil. There are some hops in there, but most of the bitterness comes from roasted malt. Nice long finish.

DELICIOUS. Had at The Pub in Pembroke Pines. Pours a super dark brown color with a tan head. Malty aromas everywhere with driied dark fruit and chocolate. Once the thick and rich malty beer hits your tongue you smile knowing you are drinking a great beer. Some bitterness balances out this beer. Very nice!

(2008-07-18) Deep dark brown. Clear. Medium-sized tan head that disappeared quite quickly. Malts and chocolate in nose. Full oily palate with some carbonation and alcohol. Malts (roasted), chocolate, liquorice and some bitterness. Bitterness increases in aftertaste. Also, roastedness tastes more clearly in long-lasting aftertaste.

Tick dark pour with a sponge toffee like head. Dark malty scent, something sweet in there as well, reminds me of molasus. Dark Chocolat taste, some nuts. Sticks to the tongue. Nice and Thick, I can see where it gets it’s name. A little too sweet in the finish.

Pours a black with a hint of brown. Nice fluffy tan head. Aroma is very nutty and chocolate with some coffee. A tiny bit of wine like fruitiness to it. Flavor is very malty and chocolate. A nice coffee/espresso note in the finish that made it a little bitter but pleasant and smooth. Nice and full bodied for a black ale. Really good alternative to a standard stout or porter.

Poured black with a tan head. The aroma was of chocolate and coffee. This was an amazing beer that was deep in taste and worth every penny. One of the better beers.

Bottle, from Cornelius, Edinburgh. (What a great shop!) Brown pour with ruby highlights. Light brown cap of sticky fine foam. Wet black dirt aroma, rustic, smokey, a nice Cheerio® edge. Chewy, soft chalky roast, funky mineral chocolate, very apparent alcohol, especially for just 6%, but I totally dig it here. Full bodied, sweet, earthy hop finish with a pinch of salt. So much going on in this, and all of it working together remarkably well. More character than lots of beers twice its size.
