A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

330ml bottle which pours black with a deep red hue when held to light. Creamy tan head which is nicely resilient. Nose is roasted oats, bitter chocolate and a hint of coffee. Full bodied, great mouth feel, sweet and malty with velvety chocolate and vanilla giving way to bitter coffee. Really nice, long creamy, slightly bitter finish. Would buy again.

Black, opaque with a minimal head. Aroma of dark malt, caramel, biscuit, hazelnut and nutmeg. Roasty, bitter some yeasty notes. Full body, but quite thin finish.

Black, tan head, nice lacing, and thin retention. Chocolate and roast aroma. Full bodied, roasted malt, chocolate sweet, and mild hop bitter notes. Great balance, nice dry notes, medium bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Needs to be in a 6 pack already. This one id’s over a year old and still holds a bit of a dark Carmel head. And the rich chocolate body is still quite inviting.

Very subtle smelling but what a pungent taste. Gorgeous dark appearance. Quite malty and caramel tasting. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330ml bottle, pours dark brown with a bubbly head with short lasting tan lace. Roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruits, medium bodied, oily texture thinning out to balanced lightly bitter finish, soft carbonation.

Roasted coffee and chocolate aromas; fair amount of bitterness that merges with the coffee flavors. Very dark brown, almost black. Small light brown head. Taste dominated by coffee bitterness; mild to moderate sweetness present as well. Fairly full bodied; texture is a bit oily with average carbonation; a long bitter sweet finish. Overall a quite good beer; I like the balance between the malt and hops with both quite prominent. Fairly complex.

330 ml bottle from Sobeys Liquor, served in a nonic pint glass. Pours like its namesake, looks the part, too, except that motor oil doesn’t have a head of light mocha that’s bubbly, pearly, maintains like a mofo, and leaves all manner of lace islands. Roasted barley and oats abound on the nose, with espresso, cocoa, nuts, savory soy, buttered cinnamon toast, and hints of black liquorice. Flavor is all kinds of toasty, roasty, and caramelized - bittersweet chocolate, French roast coffee with cream, hazelnuts and peanuts, and oat-and-wheat malted cereal with brown sugar and cinnamon. Rich, chewy body and a lovely aftertaste and gentle warmth with just the right staying power. Pour this into your engine and you’ll purr like a Jaguar all day. A truly delicious old ale that out-stouts stouts. More, please!
