Ingredients: Pale malt; Roasted barley; Oats; Washington Galena, Worcester Fuggles and Kent Goldings hops.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Scottish porter but indeed, as indicated above, closer to an English old ale. Sticky, beige, thin, dense and relatively stable head, colour very dark chestnut brown, bordering on black. Malty and smoky aroma of cured meat, smoked bacon, charcoal, dried plums, coffee powder, bitter chocolate, thyme, liquorice, iron but not disturbingly so, bayleaf, candi sugar and dried leaves. Subdued fruity onset, dried fruits, dryish with a subtle sweet touch, iron hint, liquorice with a certain amount of subtle saltiness, oily and smooth mouthfeel, caramelly and nutty malts, smokiness comes up again in the end with some leafy hop bitterness, medium long and dry. Very malty beer and a classic in that it forms the starting point of the famed Ola Dubh series.

33cl bottle. Dark brown/black colour with a thin tan head. Coffee, liquorice, chocolate and dried fruits in the aroma. Soft to average carbonation and medium to full bodied. Taste is bitter but well balanced with some fruity notes and with a long bitter aftertaste. Overall, a very good beer.

(Harviestoun Old Engine Oil (Bottle)) Bottle 330 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 6% Black in colour, with a tall and thick tan head sitting on top. Very good reteniton, medium lacing left behind. Aroma of coffee, liquorice, light hops. Taste is nicely bitter, with coffee, lots of roasted malts, light dark chocolate, some fruitiness too. Aftertaste also bitter with long duration. Medium thick body, soft carbonation, mildly dry and a smooth feeling on the palate. Very good, highly drinkable beer. Ver

Note - The bottle says black ale. Near black pour. Exceptional head volume, retention and lacing. Light chocolate nose with hints of roast. Medium body with a touch of creamy texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is a bit subdued, but well balanced with a nice level of complexity. Let this one warm to room temperature. It begins with a blend of flavors - roast, hop and hints of dark fruit over a caramel sweetness with biscuit notes. A mild bitterness and a slight mineral note emerge in the middle. The slow fade from the middle to the finish allows flavor discernment and here is where this one shines and its complexity becomes evident. The finish is a slow fade into a light sweetness over a light hop flavored bitterness.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with auburn tinge. Fairly small, yet stylish, dark latte-colored head. Aroma is roasted, some chocolate, chocolate confectionary, some dark dried, fruitiness.Taste is roasted, some wooden flavor, wood, coal, ash on the finish. Dried, dark fruits are prominent. Fairly low carbonation, not as viscous or big as you might think. Good drinkability.

Dark brown/black appearance with a very minimal tan head. Roasty aromas, light coffee, chocolate, earthy. Has a smooth, oily texture with a rather fizzy carbonation. The taste starts sweet, dark chocolate turning into a dark roast coffee before slowly but surely getting hit by the bitterness of the hops. Very well balanced, my kind of beer. It fits the name.

A dark brown coloured beer with a weak tan coloured head. A rich and heady aroma, liquorice, dark chocolate and espresso coffee, plus a meaty, Marmite-like aroma. Medium mouthfeel. A rich mouth-filling, roasted malt taste, slightly sweet liquorice, chocolate and coffee. A slight smokiness then a smooth creaminess as suggested on the label. There is a touch of dry cereal towards the end. The finish continues with the dry cereal element.
