JaPe (69), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 14, 2008 Yummy watery smoky malt flavor. Followed by sweet brown sugar Then comes a bitterness like you’ve been drinking a hoppy beer. . Scratchy palette. Color is perfect dark and mysterious. It gets better as it gets warmer. Good stuff. illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Mar 14, 2008 Poured into a tulip glass. Extremely dark brown, with red hues and a finger of tan head. Some spiderweb lacing adorns the glass.
Aroma is sweet and fruity, with some chocolate and cherry.
Taste is mainly chocolaty, with some caramel too. There’s some cherry sweetness and hop bitterness as well. Nice balance and interesting flavors.
Very smooth mouthfeel but carbonation is a bit low. Really silky and tasty, very good beer. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Mar 13, 2008 330 ml bottle. pours very dark brown with a medium tan head. aromas are very sweet and consist of chocolate covered candy caramel. flavours are sweet as well with the same things goin on as the aromas. some bitterness does show but then is overpowered but the sweetness. very drinkable and smooth but no complexity. enjoyable but forgetable. yarry (370), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada Mar 11, 2008 330ml bottle, 6.0% a/v
Absolutely opaque black colour with a nice brown head. Smells strange almost like apricots, pears, espresso and chocolate. The taste is, as the label says, wickedly smooth. Tastes of chocolate, espresso, mild plums, and burnt malt. Very nice flavour, very nice beer. beerbill (1918), Laurel, New York, USA Mar 9, 2008 Bottle. Pours nearly black and allows just a few twinkles of deep ruby light to pass when held up against sunlight. Moderate light brown head that lasted beyond mid-glass and left spotty lacing. Pleasant aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is again chocolate with roasted malt and some light coffee as well, especially near the finish. Very smooth with some light hops bitterness at the close. Good one! ILduce (133), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Mar 8, 2008 Bottle: Almost black with thin tan head. Pleasant aromas of burnt coffee beans, dark chocolate and roasted malts. Tastes like toast with molasses and dried figs. Nice body but still not as rich as I’d hoped. Alcohol hides well...sweet end. Solid olde ale. rob6239 (25), Ontario, Canada Mar 7, 2008 Tried this in bottle. Very dark, but not quite black as I expected and a light brown head. Strong pleasant aroma. Great mix of bitter and sweet and chocolate/nutty tastes. BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA Mar 7, 2008 Bottle. The pour doesn’t look as black and viscous as the rear label so claims. It is black but thins around the edges to where light easily passes through. The beige head is quickly dissipating. The aroma is a little roasty with notes of chocolate, coffee, and wood. The flavour, at first, seems very porter-like with light cocoa qualities and some robust coffee and roasty qualities as well as a hints of plum. However, as the brew leaves the taste buds, extreme nuttiness hits with subtle sweetness. There was so much sudden nuttiness that it just completely surprised me. After the initial sip, it felt like I ate peanutbutter on a loaf of bread. It was surprising because I didn’t detect a whole lot of this in the aroma. A nice blend of a sweet cocoa, nuts, hints of coffee as well as a slight bitterness of the hops is a nice balance of flavour in the dry finish. I was skeptical at first, reading the rear label. But this is quite enjoyable.
