RiverHorse (454), New Jersey, USA Dec 27, 2007 Pours a deep, dark brown, almost black color into the dimpled mug. Scents of roasted malt and coffee. A thick, filling taste with chocolate, malt, espresso and slight hoppy bite in the finish. Wasn’t as complex as I would have hoped for with this old ale. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Dec 25, 2007 Bottle at home ... Rate Beer, Beer of the Day, Christmas Day 2007 ... Pours a very dark brown with a nice quarter inch of head. Smell is malty and some cocoa. Taste is where a good amount of coffee shows up. There is a nice balance of coffee and chocolate. This is a easy drinker and goes down very easily. Well done. BleacherBum (176), Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA Dec 18, 2007 Nice roasted smoky aroma. The malt is big on the nose, but the sweetness isn’t: Indicator of a well-balanced beer? Why, yes it is. The malt is the obvious highlight here, with nice chocolate roastiness and smoke, but it is balanced very nicely with the hops. Tastes like a stout, with a scotch ale kick. Smooth and medium-bodied, at just the right strength. A nice introduction before getting in to the Oaked/Reserve version of this beer. dmac (1418), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Dec 14, 2007 11.2 oz bottle purchased at Spirits RB. Pours a solid black with small tight bubbly carbonation clinging to the side of the glass and an inch of creamy beige head. Bitter sweet aroma of chocolate with some citrusy hops sweetness and burnt roastiness. Medium boided with lively carbonation that is easilly quaffable. Initial flavor is very sweet, almost a little too sweet, that fades into a nicely lasting raostines that lingers about for another minute or so. Would of liked this beer to have more body and alcohol considering the name. illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Dec 14, 2007 Draft at Beneluxx in Philly. Pours dark brown with a brown head. Medium bodied, but with a slight watery texture. Aroma of peat, chocolate, and wet grains. Flavor of caramel, chocolate powder, bread, and tobacco with some green apple mid palate. Finish has a slight sourness and astringency, with some dryness as well. Maria (6056), Thisted, Denmark Dec 13, 2007 If I had tasted this before and if I were a blond, which I’m not, I immediately would lie down under my car and try to empty the oil from the engine. I simply cannot understand, that this isn’t a stout - so perhaps I AM a blond????
It’s a black beer with a brown hue and almost no head. Both the aroma and the flavour have notes of chocolate, roasted malt and licorice. he mouthfeel is quite oily and there is a nice, just right sweetness - yummi!!! DrBayern (1135), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA Dec 11, 2007 11. 2 oz bottle. Nearly opaque dark brown with orange/brown highlights and a large tan head that offers up some nice lace. Dark caramel, molasses, and chocolate aroma with some hints of vanilla. Smooth, medium body with very light carbonation add up to a satisfying mouthfeel. Well balanced with sweet malt flavors up front and a soft bitterness that follows to an even, pleasing finish.
