Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

9/26/07 From the bottle. Aroma is dark fruit with chocolate forward, followed by a good roast malt tone. Appearance is black with a medium tan head. Flavor is roast with some black patent forward, then slight sweetness and lots of chocolate. This has the mellowed and combined complexity of a well aged brew. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, grainy, with a dry finish and no warmth. Overall, this is very good and has great complexity with no clashing.

Pours an almost opaque black with no head. Nose is like old tar from a tree. Just very earthy and resin like. Raisins. Slight touch of dried out wood that still holds a fragrance. Flavor is smooth. Definite raisins there. Nice aged woody flavor. Thick with character. Feel is good. Slight bubble, but an otherwise thicker texture over the tongue. Very drinkable. More of a sipper, but a nice aged old ale.

Pour: dark chocolate. Head: creamy, medium tan, thin. Aroma: sweet, roasty, coffee, molasses, vanilla. Flavor: not as complex as nose, roasted. Palate: medium bodied. Finish: a little more abrupt than I would have liked.

0,33l bottle. Small toffee coloured medium head, flatteness fast. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, raisins, chocolate. Very dark reddish, almost black. Palate is medium thick, not much carbonate. Flavour starts with sweet roasted malt taste. Also hint of some vegetables.. peas or grass? Aftertaste is pleasantly bitterish.

11.2 oz bottle purchased at the Holiday Wine Cellar. The brew filled my glass as an opaque brown with a short lived layer of creamy foam topping. The initial aroma is a dark roasty malt presence with notes of fresh coffee. The drink is smooth and relaxed with a creamy texture and a flavoring of roast malt and coffee. Okay stuff to be had one or a couple of times.

bottle - Pours black with a thin tan head. It smells mostly of roast malt plus a little coffee. The flavor is roasted malt with some chocolate and mild hops. Medium bodied and light on the carbonation, it goes down easy. I’m a little surprised this rates higher than the bourbon barrel version as I prefer that one.

Pours out dark red with minimal head. Aroma is chocolate malt with a hint of merlot smoothness. Thick and chewy definite chocolate malt in the taste, but very smooth as if drinking wine. Does not have a wine bite in the finish, but instead a faint roastiness. Very tasty.
