Sweet stout, the hops doesn’t overpower, good balance in flavor. iowaherkeye (1832), Bakersfield, California, USA Jan 28, 2007 11.2oz, no date. Pours a deep dark ruby with a one finger beige head. Aroma is a bit milk chocolatey, with some old cacao beans, caramel, toasted and roasted malts and some coffee. Smells like a sweet stout, actually, but since there are fifty styles of old ale, we’ll run with the latter. There is also a bit of oxidized paper, molasses, and port. Flavor has a bit of tobacco, light acidic tang, roasty chalky malts, a bit of baker’s chocolate and a dry finish. Mild to moderate bitterness noted. Low carbonation, medium to full body. This beer was a pleasant surprise. Stefano (1323), Esbjerg, Denmark Jan 21, 2007 Dark brown with a frothy head. Aroma is musty and oxidized, with some sweet brown sugar and molasses. Flavor is of dark roasted malts, toffee, sweet caramel and charcoal with some oak barrel undertones and vanilla. Pleasantly hopped finish.
