Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

I purchased this at Lukas Liquor in St. Louis after searching southern IL without any luck. Harsh flavor at first; bitter but sweet; heavy in alcohol.

In the bottle from Beertopia. I actually find this to be a better beer than the Special Reserve version. The unbalanced whisky flavor is not present in this one and the big chocolate taste can develop into its own. Has a high level of sweetness, but the malt sugar is kept in check with the roasted body well. This may be the only example that I know of where the barrel conditioning hurts the beer.

11.2 oz bottle from wheninhell - thanks Andy! Pours black with a brown head. Nice, sweet, roasty malt nose, touches of raisin. Bittersweet chocolate flavors, lightly roasty malt. A bit of peat shows up in the finish. Nice, but could be bigger.

Bottle. Rather dark, almost black, topped off with a large thick dark tan head. Smells thick (!) roasted malts by the bagful, coffee, espresso, cocoa, smoke and just the hint of coriander in the nose. Taste is very malty, a pleasure of malts, chocolate and just some winter fruits. Lasts well in the mouth, little bit bitter. Just a bit straightforward and inoffensive. Excellent, but no real surprises - does what it says on the tin.

I’m on a roll selecting good after dinner beers lately. This one was a suprise that I picked up in a Beers from around the World sampler. Bottle claims the recipe is Celtic. Pour is dark brown with little to no head. Aroma is mostly malt. The taste is bitter. I taste carmel, cooking chocolate, and something tart on the verge of sour. All flavors are well balanced. Good beer.

12/16/06: Bottle.
Brown-black body with a creamy, smoky-tan head. Small amount of lacing – sticks to glass. Nose of roasted toffee with a touch of chocolate. Rich flavor: malts, caramel, some hops and a bit a unsweetened cocoa. Finish is slightly sour.

this was a pretty good beer. Very dark, with a bit of thickness. It’s very different from other old ales I’ve had. Very smooth and drinkable. Thought the intial aroma was very sour and sharp it weaken once it warmed a little.
