xproudfoot (729), Paleolithic, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 26, 2006 stron apples oil dirty barleywine powerful alcoholz aroma. flat bacl oil in a glass. flavor is oddly more like grape soda with roast beans, stale, burnt hop finish, yech. flat and crappy palate. 2002 bottle. Thought an "old ale" should be able to stand up to age a little better but noting the abv, maybe not. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Nov 23, 2006 (330 ml bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/maine/wells/tully’s-beer-&-wine/3079.htm target=blank>Tully’s) Pretty nice but flavor is muted...Very dark brown body, nearly opaque but for some some glimmers of light along the edges. One finger of tan head recedes a bit but stays well. Aroma: tough to find much but for weak coffee-chocolate, perhaps a little bit of plum or cherry. Mouthfeel: smooth, nice. Nice fine, webby lacing. Flavor is very muted but basically light roasted coffee, bitter chocolate and a very slight hint of fruit. A let down flavor wise but perhaps this is generally to style. shrubber85 (2832), Wallhalben, Germany Nov 18, 2006 Bottle. A wood smoke, chocolate malt and alcohol aroma - initially had a medicinal smell but that faded as it warmed - had it too cold. Midnight black with small film of a head. Smokey dark chocolate flavor with moderate hops throughout. Nice full-bodied beer - well balanced. dkoonce (880), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA Nov 12, 2006 Bottle. Pours black like the name. Not quite as viscous. Took an aggressive pour to yield even a small head that was slow in developing and faded almost as quickly. Rich malty aroma. I can smell a bit of chocolate, coffee and alcohol. Think, almost oily mouth feel. Rather sweet, with a rich malt flavor. Almost as sweet as a cola. A bit tangy in the finish. drpimento (785), La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA Nov 7, 2006 Yum-o!!! wow, killer beer! let’s get lubed! nice head, plenty of lace, rich oily roasty satisfying luscious beer.
