EithCubes (2140), Indiana, USA Oct 22, 2006 Bottle. Earthy licorice aroma. Ruby-black pour with a delicious-looking lacy light brown head. Licorice and light dark chocolate malt in the mouth, and a little tart peat. Really like the sour tartness. Body could use some bulk. Dry finish. Silken smoove mf. Easy-going and mature, well-made but not much of a flavor profile to rave about. BeerHound53 (24), USA Oct 18, 2006 Black, smallish head that went away quickly. Tastes of burnt earth with a slight sour taste and a little Alcohol after. Nice Ale. motelpogo (4394), Plzen, Czech Republic Oct 16, 2006 bottled. pretty intensely black with a light beige head. decent aroma of molasses and asphalt. plenty of flavour - toast, prunes, cocoa powder and cream, becoming quite sweet. pleasant stuff, just could use a bit more guts aerosol999 (113), Quebec, Canada Oct 11, 2006 Aroma: Brandy, candied fruits, roasty, chocolate, figs and alcohol
Appearance: Pours thick. Dark, almost opaque with ruby highlights. Very little head but dark tan colour.
Flavour: Surprisingly light but complex. Roast character dominates with cocao and espresso flavours. Not too sweet no astringency and alcohol does not come through into the flavour. Well balanced and complex.
Overall: Dangerous! Luscious aroma not overpowering with a delicious roasty hang. More like dark cacao than milk chocolate. Roasty without burnt character. Finishes sweet but not cloying, very nice, very clean -no esters. Almost like a super scwartzbier. Very complex and aptly named: pours like engine oil. Theis (3617), Denmark Oct 8, 2006 Bottle at home. Black - not much head. Burned, smoked, bitter, tar. A bit like the smell of a garage, but not as thick as I expected. Rather smooth thou. High carbonation. Lubiere (4463), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Oct 2, 2006 Deep black with a thick light moka lacing head, not very carbonated. Nice chocolate malt aroma, like bitter chocolate. In mouth, a nice chewy chocolate malt with notes of bitter coffee, and light herbal notes. Long and sustained bitterness from roasted malts. Rich bodied. A very nice old ale veering on porter territory. Bieropholie import mid 2005. bubbleflubber (885), Collinsville, Virginia, USA Oct 2, 2006 Pours opaque black into the glass, with interesting ruby and pink fringe hues when held to the light. The dark brown head diminishes quickly, leaving no lace of which to speak. The nose contains large amounts of choco malts. This transfers into the flavor well.... tons of bitter dark chocolate on the tongue. This is balanced well and compliments the bitter finish. The hops linger with the bitter roasted chocolate on the back palate for a while. The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, and feels nice and satiating. Good overall offering here. johninmelb (688), Bristol, Gloucestershire, England Sep 30, 2006 Wow, really good. Smell is chocolatey and rich, which follows into a rich, velvety, slightly vinous full-bodied flavour. Pours very deep red/brown with a fawn head. Mouthfeel is smooth and the lingering aftertaste very nice indeed.
