ChristianSA (368), Copenhagen, Denmark Jun 5, 2006 Bottle; Dark reddish brown with nut brown head. Vinous chocolaty aroma with light hints of smoke. Malty sweet flavor with strong licorice. Viscous fullbodied with low carbonation. Excellent mouth feel and an overall very enjoyable beer. Svesse (2597), Hässelby, Sweden May 28, 2006 (Bottled) Colour is very dark brown with ruby hints, opaque, with huge (but diminishing), frothy, brown head. Nose is roasted and dominated by chocolate and cocoa. Taste is huge, dominated by roasted malt, dark chocolate and sweet liquorice, some hints of cherries in brandy. Starts sweet, turns drier and more roasted towards the finish. Nice hoppy bitternes in the finish, but the taste is dominated by chocolate and liquorice. Medium to full body, huge taste but smooth and creamy. Brilliant balance! Very nice! spporras (260), Finland May 27, 2006 Updated: Mar 11, 2007(Bottle BB 04/2008) Coffee, roasted (burned) malty and licorice aroma with a hint of alcohol. Dark brown (slightly reddish) colour and small, brownish, very slightly lasting head with a hint of lacing. Coffee, burned, licorice and slightly sweet flavour. Soft carbonated and medium to full-bodied palate. 10/03/07 (original rating was 7/4/8/5/15) after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA May 27, 2006 11-oz. Yeah, they named it right. I’ve wanted to try one of these for a while--pours beautiful obsidian black and takes its time setting up a modest, slightly lacy off-white head. The stuff sits totally still in the glass for a second, and then little bubbles rise; they’re like sea monkeys. Given the achievement in color that this beer reaches, it’s a wonderfully understated, easy-going beer to drink. It smells just a bit of malt and toast, and then attacks with nice roast and coffee and a little sour finish. Fantastic stuff. pinkzambia (986), Boise, Idaho, USA May 22, 2006 Bottle: Now, this is a beer. This is what I always imagined the Scots drinking in their local pubs - not some McEwans IPA. It is oily black with a brown head, very much like the oil drained from your oil pan. It has malty aromas of alcohol, sweet and somewhat spicy chocolate. The taste is balanced well (as the commercial description says). The range is from a flat chocolate taste to a nice smoky bitter finish & aftertaste. The alcohol flavor is detectable even though it is only 6%. I really enjoyed this one! bhensonb (4187), Woodland, California, USA May 18, 2006 Aroma of dark malt/chocolate. Shows ruby tones under very strong halogen. A pruny fruit flavor followed by coffee; maybe a bit of chocolate. Mouthfeel a bit thin, carbonation is light. Roasted malt balanced by hop. Compare to McMinamin’s Terminator Stout. This has a smooth finish with toffe/coffee. Terminator is not so smooth, but it is less expensive. Kidding aside, this is great stuff to drink. puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA May 17, 2006 On tap at the Old Toad, Rochester. Roasty, porter like nose. Slightly lactose sour, burnt, and watery in the mouth, with a touch of raspberry. An enjoyable drink. jimmack (1221), Nutley, New Jersey, USA May 15, 2006 Bottle. Dark brown color with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate and a bit of coffee. Malty, chocolatey flavor with a mildly bitter hop finish.
