COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Filtered.
Ingredients: Pale malt; Roasted barley; Oats; Washington Galena, Worcester Fuggles and Kent Goldings hops.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Purple-black......foamy, dark tan head. Scent is a faint roast and a hint of smoked meat. Taste is coffee, milk, chocolate...... Slightly bitter.....silky.... Bottle says black ale, RB says old ale......I’d just call it an excellent porter.

Black pour. Big tan head. A little lacing as the head slowly falls. Big coffee and roasted malt aroma. Taste is a sweet chocolate coffee. Very good. A slight bitterness from the roast in the back. Overall a good stout.

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at the beer authority NYC. Deep black oil color. Heavy like it too. Malty, sweet but not as heavy as I expected. Very good interpretation of whatever u think it is ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Good quality would like to have again. Lovely higher attenuation roast coffee not too light or sweet chocolate nibs very subtle. Mostly tastes of black roast coffee instead of the so claimed chocolate taste (which is what makes it unique imo) with engine oil being a perfect moniker.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2013 Pours a jet black color with two fingers of off-white foam that stays on top. Nose is thick and sweet with notes of chocolate, coffee and sherry. Taste is sweet and generous, ending in a nice bitterness. Carbonation is low and the mouthfeel in general quite thick.

Thank you for sharing Max.
Finally wind up trying the base beer for the Ola Dubh after having done 12, 16 & 18 in reverse order for some reason.
Pours a very dark brown, blackish with some uneven mocha bubbles passing for head.
Picking up that soy sauce back I found in the others, bit odd for a beer of this ABV, chocolate, creamy malts, coffee, liquorish & light hops.
Taste is sweet chocolate, instant coffee, light soy sauce, creamy, sweet, light bitter hops & herbs, nicely malty, light roast, very mellow in a great way.
Oily, smooth and very easy to drink.
This is a truly great & original beer & oddly way better than 12 & 16 as far as my preferences go. Although 18 was excellent. Would take this one over 12 & 16 any day.

Pretty solid beer. Notes of black liquorice, caramel, molasses, and slight sweetness (possibly chocolate) Taste is Vanilla on the forefront, liquorice, caramel, and molasses in the middle, and a slight fruity/chocolatey finish. Quite tasty.

330ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Dull black with no head. Fruity aroma, in the mouth it’s oily, with fruit, liquorice and aniseed; the finish is long and bitter with a touch of coffee. Not as good as the cask, but not bad.
