Ingredients: Pale malt; Roasted barley; Oats; Washington Galena, Worcester Fuggles and Kent Goldings hops.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Pours a dark brown but appears black in glass, with big khaki head and good lacing. Big aroma on this with chocolate, molasses, roasted malt, coffee grounds and a smokiness. Taste is big also with dark chocolate and caramel that give it a sweetness first, then dark roasted malt providing a nice charred, bitter coffee flavor. Finishes with a smooth bitterness that lingers. Body is medium-full with a nice creamy mouthfeel and a low carbonation level. Very good porter or old ale (depending on where you get your info). Flavors are very well integrated and balanced nicely. Was surprised how good this was and would like to try other beers from this brewery. ---Jeremy H

A dark brown coloured beer with a weak tan coloured head. A rich and heady aroma, liquorice, dark chocolate and espresso coffee, plus a meaty, Marmite-like aroma. Medium mouthfeel. A rich mouth-filling, roasted malt taste, slightly sweet liquorice, chocolate and coffee. A slight smokiness then a smooth creaminess as suggested on the label. There is a touch of dry cereal towards the end. The finish continues with the dry cereal element.

24/X/14 - 33cl bottle from Bierhalle Deconinck (Vichte) @ home - BB: X/2015 (2014-1244) Thanks to Erwin for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark brown to black beer, big creamy irregular beige head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: caramel, bit sweet, malty, hay, grains, bit fruity, not very roasted, actually. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: little sourish, fruity, mocha, cocoa powder, some caramel, soft bitterness, bit sweet. Aftertaste: bit of chlorine, pretty hoppy, coffee, some charcoal, hint of banana, bitter and dry.

Cola black beer with a small dark beige head. Some roastiness in the aroma. Light to medium body. Watery texture. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of sourness. Enjoyable.

About black body, beige head, crocheted lacings. Aroma; dark chocolate, mocca coffee notes, cocoa, dusty hops. Taste; dark chocolate, mocca coffee, cocoa, choco-liquorice, dusty dry hops back there. Nice body, half dry. A bit juicy finish with very dark fruits into the chocolate stuff. Isn’t it a porter?? Well, could be enjoyed as one anyway. Poured from 330mL bottle. Near black with dissipating tan head. Aroma of roast malt and dark chocolate. Same flavour, nice balance, flavours are a little light and subdued. A nice sipper from time to time, but not especially memorable in any way.

It, called Black Ale vs Porter, is a lovely black colour and brings a 1 finger head of tannish foam with a careful pour. As the foam shrinks, great lacing left behind. The smell is marvelous with smooth notes of chocolate, both sweet and bitter. Almost? get a hint of licorice. The taste brings that chocolate with no hint of the licorice I noted in the smell. Nicely roasty to go along with the chocolate, this such a soothing, comforting beer to drink. The silkiest of mouth feels, this is just bloody awesome. I’m glad I picked up a few bottles, both with the labels upside down and right side up.

Rich brew filled with roasted coffee, chocolate and a wee bit of tart cherry. Pleasantly clean on the palate with a long toasted bitterness in the finish.

Bottle from Stockmann in Tallinn (€ 3,30). BB Jan 2016. Pours black with a thick tan head that drops very slowly, leaving some lacing. Nose is intense with grassy-fruity-resiny hops (big up for Galena!) and sweet chocolaty-caramelly malts dominating. Taste is chocolaty and fruity sweet, medium bitter, with notes of coffee. Body low medium, carbonation very modest, palate soft and velvety. Lovely stuff!

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, toast, light toffee, light dark fruit, faint smoke, and roast/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bit roast/bready malt and light-moderate yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, toast, light toffee, light dark fruit, light smoke, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, dark bread, toast, light smoke, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of roast/bready malt and light yeast ester flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent English porter. All around great complexity, balance, and robustness of roast/bready malts and light yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
