Ingredients: Pale malt; Roasted barley; Oats; Washington Galena, Worcester Fuggles and Kent Goldings hops.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2011 Sept, 2002 I loved this. My type of beer - full of interesting twists and turns and a wonderful balance between hops and malt. I also enjoyed the fact that it seems impossible to place into a simple box - is it a stout, an old ale, a mild or a brown ale? Mmmmm. Chocolate, roasted barley, coffee, apples, etc, etc. A lovely beer! [3.2]
Feb, 2008 330ml filtered bottle from Gretna Green. The brewery are careful not to ascribe a style to this beer - they call it a "dark beer" and a "black, viscous beer", but not a stout or an old ale - neither of which it is, but either of which would be a useful guideline. There is lots of body - probably from the use of oats - and "oil" is an appropriate name. The carbonation is very light - just enough to give some life - and doesn’t detract from the impression that you’re drinking pure engine oil. The flavours are full, soft and firm rather than aggressive. There’s a twiggy bitterness with notes of chocolate, charcoal, tobacco and bread dough. A satisfying and enjoyable brew. [3.8]
April, 2011 Tesco Traditional Porter. Mmm what a classic beer this Engine Oil is. Smooth and easy drinking, yet with enough flavours to keep the interest. [3.8]

This beer pours a dark brown color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, coffee and fruit. Medium body with flavors of roasted coffee, malt, dark fruit and a bit of black licorice. The finish is roasty with a malty aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottled. Clear brown/black when pouring; jet black in the glass with a very small, light brown head. Espresso, strong malt, molasses, and treacle of the nose. A treacle and honey start and a drier coffee finish. Lovely smooth mouthfeel and very well balanced. To me this is the perfect example of what a no-gimmicks stout porter should be.

Bottle @ home. Aged 2 years. Beige medium sized creamy head and an almost back liquid. Sweet roasted chocolate aroma with notes of coffee, dark bread, caramel, red fruits , and a light vinous touch of plums. Bold and smooth & oily mouth feel. Roasted but not burnt taste initially of coffee, chocholate and earth. Finish is dry and chocolate bitter with notes of licorice, salt, dark fruits and subtle vanilla. Lingering bitterness.

The label says: viscous, bittersweet, dark. After pouring, I can only agree with that. Dark color with cream-coloured head that also is creamy in structure. Aroma of roasted malt. Taste is full and the texture is oily.

Black body. Taste is dark with coffee and chocolate. Bitter after taste but still very drinkable. A new favorite for me!
