Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered.
A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

Experimente!

Old Engine Oil is a good beer with lots of roasted malt and chocolate flavor. It pours very dark with little to no head and has a full body feel to it.

Dark and thick. Very roasty and chocolaty in flavor. Not much of a head on it. There is a full flavor without feeling heavy. I would certainly pick it up again.

Bottle, 2009-12-24, Uddingston AR: Gun powder (Chinese tea), roasted malt AP: High brown creamy head, dark brown body F: Roasted malt, tasts like a german rauchbeer i.e smoky, the smoke hangs on for a long time, it’s smooth so it’s not a problem. Another well brewed beer from the Scotish Harvistoun

Bottle at home. Black with a small brown head. Aroma moderate malty (caramel, roasted, licorice, dark fruits), lightly hoppy. Flavor moderate sweet, light bitter. Light body. Quite lovely.

330mL Bottle: Black pour w/ a small khaki head. Aroma is somewhat sweet w/ roasted malt & smoke. Roasted malt, caramel & cocoa in the flavor. Pretty mild, everything blends together so nicely. I feel that I am underestimating this beer for that reason. I can say it seems a little too sweet. Other than that, very good.

11.2 ounce bottle from Total Wine in Tustin ($4.79). Pours very dark brown to almost black with a thin layer of tan foam. Aroma of sweet roasted malts, molasses, and raisins/prunes. Flavor of slightly burnt malts, caramel, and medicine. Not much of the promised chocolate, though. Balanced, but not a whole lot going on with the flavor. Rather light mouthfeel with noticeable hops in the finish.

11.2oz bottle. Pours a black body with a finger-width, very creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is quite nice. A good amount of roasts blend well with some rich malts and smooth chocolates. A light licorice and darker fruits as well as a bit of molasses and woody dryness. Flavor is really nice as well. Lots of sweet roasts up front with soft malts. Smooth, darker chocolates with more of that dry wood from the aroma. Not getting as much licorice or dark fruits, but a little peat and smoke along with a touch of molasses sweetness come in during the finish with plenty more roasts and a woody, dry finish. Just a touch of bitterness and a long lingering aftertaste. Lighter bodied, but very smooth and fits this beer well. Overall, I was impressed with this. Lots of roasts with a great, soft malt balance. A light sweetness keeps this balanced and the body makes it very easy drinking. Very nice beer.

Mostly chocolate taste and aroma. Not as thick as I was expecting - medium to light bodied. Lightly dry. Light carbonation. Highly drinkable. Not as strong or full bodied as good old ales.
