A superb, rich, full-bodied beer derived from a 1970s homebrewing recipe. Wickedly smooth chocolate dominates the flavour, which is nicely balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

11.2oz btl. Pours an opaque black with a nice head that looks like chocolate mousse. Nice roasty nose. Taste is strong roast with chocolate tones and molasses that coat the mouth and finishes strong. Dark and delicious.

Aroma: roasty, dominated by chocolate with some coffee; Appearance: black with dirty head that dissipates fairly quickly; some lacing; Taste: sweet, chocolatey, balanced by some bitterness and coffee; better balanced than other chocolate/coffee beers I’ve had; Palate: full, creamy body with average carbonation; wonderful long bittersweet finish; Overall: not my absolute favorite style of beer but a great example; would definitely buy again.

33cl bottle at home. Pours opaque black with thick, creamy, diminishing beige head. Medium to full body, fair lacing, rich oily mouthfeel, lively carbonation, dry bitter finish. Aromas of roasted barley, black coffee, dark chocolate. Similar tastes on the tongue well balanced by hoppy bitterness, hints of lemon, citrus peel, resin. At some point sweetness comes back with hints of milk chocolate, caramel, and dried fruits. Was perfectly paired with dark chocolate filled with almonds, which added to the overall experience. Superb ale!

L: pours very black with a low tan head, nice lacing. S: great aroma of roasted malts, licorice, oats. Very rich. T: great flavour of malt and oats, anise. Quite an easy-drinking flavour, refreshing but full. F: a decent body, great smooth feel from the oats, lightly carbonated. O: I could drink this any time. Rich and tasty, yet light enough to have two or three. Excellent.
