Cask at Bat. Deep viscous black, bubbly beige head. Chocolate, subtle whisky booze, light coffee, some light peat smoke on the nose. Velvety soft, light sweetness, rich roast, lots of chocolate coffee malt flavours, lightest touch of booze and a rich roasty bitterness on the finish. Coats the mouth, seriously tasty. Nom.

Cask at The Hanging Bat. Black & not much else in the glass but then appearances are deceiving. So are beginnings because to the eye it seems to be medium bodied. But from the moment it hits the mouth it powers out from the core a rich full bodies and beautifully fully integrated knitted complex. beer of some smoke, peat, velvet & roast with rich smooth earth & chocolate. And the alcohol is totally tamed. Without doubt the best Old Engine Oil ever released.

Cask at hanging bat. Black with tan head. Rich roasty smokey aroma. Taste is a balanced blend of roastiness, peat smoke and chocolate. Thick and smooth with a lingering chocolatey finish. Alcohol is nowhere to be seen. Very tasty

(Gravity cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 23 Nov 2012) Black colour with brief head. Malty, fruity nose with dark chocolate, black coffee, liquorice, oak wood and vanilla. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dark chocolate, black coffee, caramel and a warming, vinous finish. Full body, with oily mouthfeel. Fairly sweet. Quite powerful, but well balanced and very nice.

Gravity cask at The White Horse on Parsons Green, London during the 2012 Old Ale Festival. Pours oily brown-black with fine brown bubbles. Coffee on the nose, earth, good roast, milk chocolate. Medium to big sweet flavor with dark chocolate, earthy bitterness, raisins, dirt. Full bodied with fine carbonation and an oily texture. Lightly sticky sweet to finish with modest warmth, further cocoa, earth and restrained roast. Moderate lasting bitterness. Great stuff.

Cask at The White Horse Parson’s Green. It pours dark brown (near black) with a small tan head. The nose is treacle, coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, meaty, salt, dark fruit and wood. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, burnt caramel, salted liquorice, bitter chocolate, smoke, meatiness, warming alcohol, chewy malt and wood with a warming finish. Full body, soft carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Good depth of flavour, yet smooth and well-balanced.

Gravity @ The White Horse On Parsons Green Old Ale Festival. The pour’s pitch black with absolutely no head. The beer appears thick, viscous and intimidating. The nose is rich dark chocolate, bitter cacao and charred malts. Wood, ash. The taste is wonderfully rich, sludgy dark chocolate. Burnt toast and mineral. Slightly salty wood. Awesomely thick body, wonderful vitality. This beer drinks very well considering it’s profile, and wears the chunky ABV effortlessly. Overall, a pretty stellar effort. Wow.
