crizay (1056), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA Mar 9, 2008 Black pour, medium beige head. Aroma is chcocolate and a touch of booze. Flavor is chocolate, a touch of espresso and almost a creamy hint of vanilla with very slight amount of whiskey. Oak flavors come out in the aftertaste and even a hint of smoke is there. Slightly sweet caramel and sugary throughout, but mainly chocolate and oak. The version blows the regular away bar none. Very creamy mouthfeel and pretty thick and cloying.
michael-pollack (1209), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA May 10, 2008 12oz. Bottle: Aroma of whiskey, malts, roasting, and wood. Poured black in color with a small, creamy, brown head that diminished. Opaque. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of whiskey, wood, chocolate, smoke, vanilla, malts, and coffee. Medium body. Oily texture. Soft to average carbonation. Sweet, roasted, whiskey finish. doubleo (465), San Diego, California, USA May 1, 2008 11.2oz bottle. Pours black with brown highlights, no head and no lace. Smells of sweet dark malt, alcohol, dank wood, and a bit of roastiness. Tastes of dark, sweet, roasty malts and alcohol. Some wood and bourbon flavors toward the finish. Definitely better than the un-BA version. The body is medium/thick with decent carbonation. Much thicker than OG version. Pretty good. BlackDonald (371), Anchorage, Alaska, USA Apr 30, 2008 This was really great stuff. This is much richer than its regular version, almost has a viscous mouthfeel, with a lot of barrel aged character here, you can really taste the whiskey notes. Rich and creamy, with lots of chocolate and caramel here, but all in moderation, this is really well balanced. GAManiac (63), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Apr 29, 2008 Pours black with mahogany tint around the edges. Very thin bubbly tan head that dissipates almost immediately leaving minimal lacing. Tough to get around the boozy whiskey smell of this one. There is definitely a toffee, chocolate smell along with the roasted malt aroma, but it really comes back to the whiskey for me. Big, nice, complex taste where the whiskey doesn’t dominate as much as the nose. Big roasted chocolate malt taste up front with some caramel and coffee in there as well. The whiskey is present throughout but isn’t overpowering. Creamy mouthfeel with very little carbonation and a nice malt whiskey burn. The whiskey is certainly present in this one so the drinkability isn’t extremely high. All in all, a decent representation of an old ale with a serious whiskey kick. BOLTZ7555 (244), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Apr 20, 2008 Sampled via Jonpol. THANKS!!! This beer exhibits a richer, darker, more complex flavor than Ola Dubh. I think some rate the Ola Dubh series higher based solely on the idea, rather than the flavor and added complexities. This might have also been sitting a while longer and the aging had done it well. Bitter chocolate, sweet vanilla, brown sugar, and barbeque smoke. Good.
