Decanted a deep dark chestnut color with a 3 finger mocha colored meringue cap...moderate head retention, laces well. Modest carbonation
The Nose: bitter chocolate, dark roasted husks and sour cherry with a wisp of musty wet hay. Delightful..almost like a flavored stout.
Profile: Roasty-malty body balanced by grassy kent golding bittering and the patent malt husk astringence. Midway you get some complexity with berry fruit tastes, figs, cocoa, tobacco, licorice. Finishes wet and goes slightly to the sweet side with lots of lingering chocolate-cherry tastes.
A lovely dark beer ...not in character with an "old ale" at all...had i tried this blindfolded, I’d have pegged it as a chocolate-porter.
mjs (427), Finland Jul 22, 2008 (2008-07-18) Deep dark brown. Clear. Medium-sized tan head that disappeared quite quickly. Malts and chocolate in nose. Full oily palate with some carbonation and alcohol. Malts (roasted), chocolate, liquorice and some bitterness. Bitterness increases in aftertaste. Also, roastedness tastes more clearly in long-lasting aftertaste. gilvanblight (322), Windsor, Ontario, Canada Jul 20, 2008 Tick dark pour with a sponge toffee like head. Dark malty scent, something sweet in there as well, reminds me of molasus. Dark Chocolat taste, some nuts. Sticks to the tongue. Nice and Thick, I can see where it gets it’s name. A little too sweet in the finish. FunkyBrewster (109), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 19, 2008 Pours a black with a hint of brown. Nice fluffy tan head. Aroma is very nutty and chocolate with some coffee. A tiny bit of wine like fruitiness to it. Flavor is very malty and chocolate. A nice coffee/espresso note in the finish that made it a little bitter but pleasant and smooth. Nice and full bodied for a black ale. Really good alternative to a standard stout or porter. dwaggs2 (26), Warrensburg, Missouri, USA Jul 18, 2008 Poured black with a tan head. The aroma was of chocolate and coffee. This was an amazing beer that was deep in taste and worth every penny. One of the better beers. Doppelganger (1086), Oxford, Oxfordshire, England Jul 16, 2008 Bottle, from Cornelius, Edinburgh. (What a great shop!) Brown pour with ruby highlights. Light brown cap of sticky fine foam. Wet black dirt aroma, rustic, smokey, a nice Cheerio® edge. Chewy, soft chalky roast, funky mineral chocolate, very apparent alcohol, especially for just 6%, but I totally dig it here. Full bodied, sweet, earthy hop finish with a pinch of salt. So much going on in this, and all of it working together remarkably well. More character than lots of beers twice its size.
