Tasted this at The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in November 2008. Cask, handpump dispense. Ruby black in colour with a creamy buff white head. Dark bitter chocolate in the long aroma. Good smooth creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a complex and good range of flavours. Maltloaf base with mocha coffee, bitter chocolate, prune juice all evident. Very little hops detected but dry spicy resins are just about present in the aftertaste. Finish is sweet, malty and robust with dry toasted almonds, liquorice and thick treacle fudge. A fantastic Scottish Old Ale in style and its dark....... so you can dabble in the dark side Harviestoun and brew something exciting.

Oct, 2008 JDW, Gravesend Malty and slightly sweet with a nutty touch and a lingering hop finish. A little rugged and old fashioned and very British.

Cask Conditioned at J. D. Wetherspoon - Sir John Oldcastle, London
Black color, thin head with creamy clots, sticky lace. Light hop and roasted malt aroma. Good flavor, where the smooth body wins over the roasted malt and chocolate, it has delicate tones and a great balance. Very good.

Cask at the Railway, Putney, "Mopping up the Spoons fest", 15th Nov 08. Dark brown with a red tint and a frothy head. Smooth malt and fruit flavour - nice winter flavours. Lots of lingering late dryness. You can really taste the hops. Good stuff. A winter ale at a drinkable strength.

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2009 Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms JDW, Bristol November 2008. dark brown in colour with reddish hints and a decent tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark fruits and grassy hops. Flavour had plenty of chocolate, a spicy kick and a hoppy, dry finish. This was my favourite beer of the recent Wetherspoons festival.

Cask in the enw crown. This is surly a porter or something as it was really dark? Alround rating: Roasty, chocolate, yet packed with grapefruit and was really bitter. Interesting beer.

Cask handpull at Humphrey Bean JDW, Tonbridge. Very dark brown, ruby, lasting beige head. Fullish dark beer, spicy nutmeg hop. Malts are dryish and decent, about moderate, its got good choc, some dark fruit on aroma. I thought this was pretty good and I had it again before I left.
