A lovely dark beer that’s on the lighter side of the porter style. All the flavours are there – chocolate, liquorice, deep-roasted coffee – but without the heaviness that normally confines darker beers to chilly winter nights.

Cask at The Brewers Arms, Lewes, East Sussex. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, malty, coffee aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, coffee, some chocolate too. Very tasty porter indeed.

Cask at Draft House. Black, small bubbly off-white head, no lacing. Aroma is liquorice, oily, shoe polish. Body is light, smooth, low carbonation. Taste - thin roasted barley, semisweet, under-ripe banana skin, bubblegum, watery ashy finish. The ashy finish rescues this one. Too sweet and watery for me, just didn’t push my buttons.

Cask conditioned at Banbury Beer Fest ’14. Black with tan head. Full on deeply roasted malt flavours, some bitter chocolate, liquorice, tarry notes. There is a fruity sweetness, fructose note coming through for the finish. Good stuff.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 24 Nov 2012) Black colour with brief, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of dark chocolate, black coffee, liquorice and dark rye bread. Malty, roasted taste with black coffee, dark chocolate, liquorice and a dry finish with a generous roasty bitterness. Rather light body. Well made and very nice porter.
