3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at Duke’s in Honolulu, HI. Pours a mostly clear, deeper brown colored body with a finger-width, foamy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is caramel with some cocoa, toasted nuts, and a light grass. Flavor is light caramel, some grass, a light cocoa, and a bit nutty. Finishes dry and a bit thin with a light bitterness and malty sweetness. The cocoa comes more into play a bit in a medium length aftertaste. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall, an okay brown. A bit thin, but well balanced and easy drinking.

From a bottle at Mehana brewery. Describe as their most decorated beer, it pours brown with white head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and nuts. Taste brings a bit of the same, though it’s thin and slightly astringent. Probably the best beer of the lot I tried and the most memorable to rate, as I wasn’t about to rate on the spot at the brewery.

Thanks to my fossils for bringing this back to the heat wave that is Edmonton in February....
This deep brown brew hardly produced any head on the pour. What little there is is bubbly and tan. The aroma is pretty straight forward: notable stinky coffee, sweet caramel. Lesser notes: nuts, chocolate, light citrus hops. On quick smells from the top of the glass the coffee is obvious but on long deep snorts the nuts and chocolate are much better. Not too impressive taste when colder, much better after sitting long. Lots of tasty roasted malts, plenty of nuts (in my mouth! What?), light coffee bitterness, light tanginess and I’m out of beer! Damn! Goes back easy enough, Long mild bitter finish. Forgettable.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Browned amber brew that pours a huge head that finely settles down and shows admirable resilience. Robust nut accented malt aroma is quite piquant and shows strong roasting. The flavor is highly kilned malt and nut to the point of bringing in too much tannic bitterness. Somewhat antiseptic nut finish.
