Looks like sewer sludge poured into a glass. Hardly any head. Not much aroma either. Taste is nutty, full malt flavor. Nice hop finish washed away the sweetness. Nothing Earth shattering here, but I’d order another one.

Pours bronze brown with a cream large head. Aroma is malts And spices. Flavor is a bit malty and charcoal. Descent for what it is! I’m in Hawaii who cares!

From bottle into regular shaker pint. Pours medium brown and turns bright ruby in the light. Head is thin, but persistent--forms a tight cap on the beer. Sweet, milk chocolate aroma. Palate is pretty balanced, though leaning towards crisp, for a brown ale. Flavor is rich roast, some chocolate, some earth, some fruit, with a bitter finish. Really nice brown ale, especially on Christmas in the early afternoon in Maui!

Bottle at PAU in Weimea (Kamuela), Big Island: Surprisingly delicious brown ale -- better than most out there. Very rich with wholesome flavors -- nuts, chocolate and toast. Not overly sweet like many browns. Solid hops to boot as well, but they didn’t overpower the malts (as they shouldn’t in this style). Well made beer. I actually had two in a row.

Draugt at Ryans in Honolulu. Aroma of toffee, chocolate, diacetyl. Flavor of chocolate and caramel with some vegetables. Earthy, bitter hops. A bit off.

On tap at Duke’s in Honolulu, HI. Pours a mostly clear, deeper brown colored body with a finger-width, foamy, off-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is caramel with some cocoa, toasted nuts, and a light grass. Flavor is light caramel, some grass, a light cocoa, and a bit nutty. Finishes dry and a bit thin with a light bitterness and malty sweetness. The cocoa comes more into play a bit in a medium length aftertaste. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall, an okay brown. A bit thin, but well balanced and easy drinking.

From a bottle at Mehana brewery. Describe as their most decorated beer, it pours brown with white head. Aroma is sweet with caramel and nuts. Taste brings a bit of the same, though it’s thin and slightly astringent. Probably the best beer of the lot I tried and the most memorable to rate, as I wasn’t about to rate on the spot at the brewery.

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2011 Bottle shared at the "AK to the HB" tasting on 12/30/10: The beer is a clear brownish-amber color with a medium thin light beige head that recedes quickly. Spotty lacing. Sweet caramel malt aroma. Light body with flavors of sweet malt, caramel and mild hops. The finish is brown sugar and malt. Average overall.
