2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dark brown with ruby notes and a latte coloured head that shrugged, didnít see any reason to hang around and then sauntered off. Aromas of rich dark caramel, garam masala, currants and a smidgeon of coffee grinds. In the mouth there is plenty of carbonation, but it isnít subtle. The flavours are though, but a little too subtle to the effect that you seem to be drinking a schwartzbier. So not really a significant body, some bitterness that didnít stay and a nod to those currant and raisin flavours on the (shortish) finish. Not a porter of any great character Iím afraid.

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
330ml green bottle bought at YATA in MOKO, Mong Kok.
Clear blackish brown colour; Three-quarter finger head with beige foam which fades in 40 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with active slight carbonation; Fragrant and sweet aroma of dark malt, with fair roastyness, strong toffee, caramel, strong cream, coffee, light chocolate, sugar, faint dark fruits, yeast and faint grass; Close to light sweet taste of dark malt, with fair roastyness, caramel, light toffee, Cola, very light chocolate, Molasses notes, light bread, yeast, faint lemon, very light bitter hops and very light grass; Close to light body. Slick palate; Mouth Feel is fair dark maltyness in a light but slightly thick body. Roastyness is threadbare. Only some caramel to pop up the otherwise empty Cola taste. Very little chocolate and no coffee at all. Sweetness is minimal. Dry and bready with minimal lemon to end. Blah!... Hoppiness is faint grass in nose. Faint lemon and very light grass in taste; Bitterness is very low for an abrupt, almost non- astringent Cola-bready finish; Fairly dry after taste. Very easy and slightly bitter to mouth.
Comments: For a 4% Porter, it has pretty promising aroma in strong toffee and coffee cream, but taste-wise, itís a typical 4% - empty Cola with non-deScript low roastyness, almost devoid of any dark beer tastes. Itís not bad, itís just feel like drinking a harmless exercise. Too lightweight for me!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap as the WHANGAMOMONA REPUBLIC DARK ALE at the Whangamomona Hotel. (Katie from the Hawkes Bay Independent Brewery tells me that Whangamomona Republic Dark Ale is the same beer as the Black Duck porter). I really liked this beer and am wondering now if beer always tastes much better when Iím on holiday! Rich ruby brown hue with small diminishing coffee crema head and delicate lacing. Delicious whisky peat toasted roasted malt, wood oil, liquorice, leather, coffee and especially chocolate aromas. Possibly some of those aromas may have been environmental rather than from the beer. Nicely balanced moderate bitterness and sweetness. Tingly carbonation, medium body, mildly oily texture, long dry finish.

UPDATED: OCT 24, 2014 Nice beer, not too strong in porter flavor. But tast is also a bit weak. Easy to drink, easy to enjoy

Nice roasty aroma. Thatís where it stops really. Translucent brown body. Thin bodied, light roasted taste. Not a lot else going on. Heavily carbonated. Bland! Good as an introductory porter I suppose

This is one of my favorite beers, not overly heavy beer with a good balance of roast choc and caramel flavors

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
Tasted 7/2/2014. Poured an opaque black colour with ruby red edge tint. It initially poured with a one-finger light tan head but this diminished almost immediately. Aroma of caramel malt, roasted malt, and a hint of coffee. Tastes quite sweetly of malt followed by roasted grain and some coffee. Medium body. Smooth (not creamy) with roasted grain on the finish. Nice.

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
500ml bottle. A dark brown colour that poured with a fading cola-like head. Aromas of roasted malt, dark chocolate, liquorice and raisins that translate well enough onto the palate with some supporting coffee notes but itís let down somewhat by its lack of mid-palate weight and presence. Slightly over-carbonated straight from bottle too. The finish is clean, lingers well and consists of dark, dried fruits and coffee.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
500 ml bottle in NZ
Pours clear, very dark mahogany with a small light brown, fizzy head that quickly expires.
Feel: medium body; smooth but the tingly carbonation seems a tiny bit too high.
Aroma: sweet caramel malts, toffee, brown sugar and dark roasted grains with some dark fruit overtones.
Flavor: similar to the aroma but not as strong or appealing, Has just a hint of smoke. Dark roasted malts with a bit of coffee, dark chocolate and toffee in the aftertaste.
O: an enjoyable porter with an excellent aroma. Best if not too cold.

The head is medium, the body black. It smells sweet, a bit caramel, bit chocolate. The taste is mild, a bit coffee, cramel, chocolate, raisins. Drinkable
