Thanks to El Gordo for bringing a bottle of this by over the weekend. Between a group of friends who scored some of these from the now defunct Sindees in PDX, this is the last one. Other old bottles of this had lost carbonation, but this one was well carbonated with a bubbly grey head. Nice deep amber and brown body with lots of sweet caramel malt presence. Fruity and hot with alcohol. NOt a bad beer. RIP might Hawks!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours brown/amber, with an off-white head. Aroma is malt, caramel, hops, and fruit. Flavor is caramel, malt, fruit, and hops. Body is a little thinner than expected, but it doesn’t really take away from it. It’s sad to see Hawks no longer in business. Thanks Ezra, for this bottle.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: Straightforward brown, somewhat dark, moderate to large foamy light beige head, very nice lacing.   Caramel nose, soft
citrus hop notes, with a little Avon perfume added in.   Biscuity start, somewhat bright, a little alcohol, with a soft caramel and hop
presense.   Not as thick as I would have liked, actually its fairly thin on the backside.   Continues with the citrus rind aspect
through the finish.   Decent, but for a 9.9% Barley Wine its fairly light.   Bump up the malts a bit and give it a bit more hop
bite, and then we’ve got something.   However, for a nearly 10% beer its fairly clean and smooth.   Thanks goes out to Bill
for yet another Portland gem.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared on 8/16/06 by TheBeerCellar2: Pours a clear copper brown with a thin-lacing wispy off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and a touch of piny hops. Body starts with a sweet viscous caramel maltiness, a hint of raisins and brown sugar and a nicely-balanced, bittersweet, mildly warming finish. A good barleywine.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
So sad to see this brewery go under, this brew was another great example of their beers. Pours dark orange with a strong off-white head. Very sweet and bold aroma, fig, chocolate, wood, rum, caramel, and hops. The malt character just goes through the spectrum as you drink and it warms. This was pre-aged for a year before it was released and aged so well and would continue to do so, still has the hops to age more.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rusted orange, thin white head. Nose was rich with notes of brown sugar, molasses, carmelized pineapple, and guava, with a very soft bourbon cream wood tone. Flavor is less intense but nice none the less with notes of caramel, and tropical fruit, with faint underlying hop tones of citrus and earth. Very well rounded from start to finish. Light to medium bodied, very soft carbonation, light bittersweet finish. If not for the thinner body, this would have been a top biller. Either way, glad to have tried this warming brew on this cold Baltimore evening....

Bottle. Pours a dark orange/brown body with a white small head. American barleywine aroma - orange oil and alcohol. Good flavour profile - sticky hop resin and alcohol. Lingering bitterness. Quite tasty.

Huge thanks to the Michigan Crew for this apparently rare treat. Shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and MDS. Ruby red, small white head. Awesome aroma - very sweet. Great sweet taste - woody, alcohol, and lots of hops - what a really nice barleywine. Fantastic, so say my drunken notes.
