COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Sometimes referred to as Organic Oatmeal Stout, although the pump clips and bottles are simply labelled as Organic Stout. This is not the same beer as the 4.2% Oatmeal Stout listed separately.
Stout which is dry like stout should be. We made it to taste like the bottled Guinness of old which used to be on every bar, but sadly no longer is.

Cask (GBBF 2009) - Black in colour. Coffee in the aroma with roasted malt and plain chocolate. The taste is very roasted with coffee and chocolate. Nicely balanced and very tasty.

Aroma: Strong aroma of hops and coffee, notes of wood and caramel. Appearance: Pours a very opaque dark brown-black, with a thin, lingering grey head. Taste: Cola up front with caramel in the back, along with lingering notes of astringent hoppy bitterness and very strong notes of coffee in the back. This is about as hoppy as an oatmeal stout can be for me to enjoy it, and itís delightfully on the edge between challenging and unpalatable. (But I stick to low-IBU stouts, so if IPAís are your thing, youíre going to laugh me off.) Palate: Fizzy astringent carbonation, smooth and silky mouthfeel as one would want with an oatmeal stout. Astringent all over, courtesy of the oats. Overall: If you like oatmeal stouts and arenít afraid of a bit of a sting to the mouth, this is a good stout for you. Although I ordinarily loathe much hops in a beer, this is as perfectly balanced between hops and malt as I could ask for in a stout. Pretty much precisely the thing if you wish your usual gentle oatmeal stout would grow a few teeth.

Pours an opaque black with big light brown coloured head that very slowly dissolves and leaves lace all up the glass. Aroma is roasted malts, metallic, some peat, and some cocoa. Flavour is metallic, roasted malts, dry dark malt bitterness mixed with mild hop bitterness that lingers, and light cocoa. This was on sale so I thought Iíd try it out.

Light black pour, creamy off-white/tan head. Smell is light cocoa, roasted malt, light peat, metal, light caramel. Flavor is dry. It is roasty, metallic, minerally, with a nice mild and pleasant bitterness, English hops in the finish. A delicious and drinkable brew.

Bottle. Pours a non-thick but very dark brown color with a small off-white head. Nose is a little sour/bitter, but actually has a strong oatmeal smell. Taste is nice and malty, but with a hint of chocolate. OK, but not great.

Bottled. Poured medium-deep brown with a short-lived beige head. The aroma picked up sweet, toasted black malts, a pinch of honey, and some pretty good earthy character.. a little too sweet for my liking, but it was aiight. The flavor found similar stuff.. toasty, generic black malts, a touch of nutty/herbal character, and vanilla at the core, with light herbal bitterness and black roast around.. finished sweet with touches of rye bread and a hit of coffee. Lighter-bodied with adequate carbonation on the palate.. roasty and a bit generic, but it was decently-constructed, and it was a smooth drinker.

Poured out an almost black brew with a colossal light brown cap that left a total disaster in my glass. Mild roast aroma, light oatmeal, milk, dry, nothing else. Another straight forward beer by hawkshead but this time is not as good. Simple yet lacking. Some oatmeal, actually more than that, kind of rich and dry, creamy taste, mellow roast and a light nondescript fruit. Finishes smooth and quiet. Not bad but Iíll take the Brodieís Prime over this any day.

Cask at GBBF. Very dark brown beer, just about clear. Softish dry palate. Very lightly smoky malt. Smooth if a bit dry. More Porter than Stout. Tasty but light.

AROMA:some fruitiness with roast malt and candy sugar on the nose APPEARANCE: Black with a creamy tan head that fades fast. Good lacing TASTE:Big roasty malt flavour with a sweet taste at the tend reminiscent of candied fruit. PALATE: full bodied with a creamy slickness.soft carbonation, astringent roast malt finish. OVERALL: a big stout with a fair amount of complexity, yet still stops a bit short of greatness. Very good.
