3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft sample at MWBBF. Pours a pale straw gold with an orange hue and no head. Notes of grass, herbs, sweet malts, and pepper, along with some orange citrus and sweet bread. The Belgian character definitely takes a backseat to the Amarillo character. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a spicy, sweet mouthfeel. Good IPA.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
16 oz draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Waiting for traffic to die down. Pours a dulled amber pour, well hazed, a bit more life on the edges with a bigger whitish head that dies to a thicker ring, laces ok. Aromas are a plethora of essences. Rye and bread dough, some biscuits, with some floral and citrusy hops, sweeter fruit, touches of fruity and lightly spicy Belgian yeast. Weird, I think. Initial is fruity, Belgian yeast makes a full presence known with a good dose of lemon and grapefruit hops, some florals, and grass. Sweeter malts, fruit, apple esters. Bread dough, more spice lingers in the back as it dries out more. Hop presence grows stronger up front and in back, lemons especially and some light ABV heat essence. Lightly spicey, a good fruitiness. Strange beer, more like a more hopped Belgian, the rye doesn’t play a huge part.. Perhaps a bit mellow. Hops are sufficnet, heavy handed how I like them, but as I get further into the beer a sweet sticky malty presence hangs on. Like some syrup or toffee. I like some elements of this beer.. Especially the hops that grow and become potent, dry, and lemony.. Strong.. But the sweetness, the Belgian yeast.. Just doesn’t appeal to me. Just a plain Rye IPA would have done well. The Belgian yeast kinda muddles and interferes. I understand it.. And it provides some nice flavors, but loses focus overall. An ok IPA experiment.
