Sampler pour on tap at the ICBG FoBAB 2012 Brewers/Sponsors Dinner (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich deep opaque black hue, dark and ominous with rich deep body, no glow. Big cakey brownish head dies to a firm layer, laces well. Aromas are gentle oak, touches of tawny port, spirit and gentle red wine. Gentle roast, deadened, with sweeter caramel and roast, vanilla, oak. Toffee, toast, and biscuits. Black malts, cocoa, and deadened sweetness, the Port seems to cover up and deaden the complexity. Initial is rich and sweet, oak and toast, dark fruit, gentle red wine, spirit, and vanilla. Oxidation, sherry and vinous qualities, toast and biscuits, black malts, thicker sweet toffee, caramel. Vanilla, gentle coffee, more oak and barrel flavor. Middle is more coffee and roast meeting spirit barrel, flavors from the Port come through more, sherry and dark fruit, vanilla, sticky qualities, and toffee. Cocoa, oak, and some roasty dryness into the backend, as we dry ths bad boy up a bit, roasty and dry backend as the finish shows roast, coffee, earth, gentle ask. Lingering firm Port barrel shows some presence lingering. Some cocoa, toffee, vanilla, oak. An odd beer that comes into it’s own half way through. Complex, but I wouldn’t say I like it more than the other versions. Nose is a bit dead. Solid beer, but I still prefer other Indignant versions. This one certainly has heart and I definitely grow into it though. It just has a mellow front end that only asserts some richer more assertive flavors and character into the middle and backend.

Draft sample at FoBAB ’12. Pours oily black in color with a small creamy khaki head. The aroma has chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, dark fruits favoring black cherry, coffee, molasses, vanilla and bourbon. The flavor has dark chocolate, roasted malts, dark caramel, molasses, black cherry, moderate sweetness, bourbon, vanilla with a thick mouth feel. Earthy bitterness to the finish. Solid Imperial stout. Good barrel character.
