COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This ’MidWestian’ dark ale, a recipe by our own Janna Mestan, is brewed with Belgian Ale yeast, Dark Candi Syrup, German specialty malts and loads upon loads of Warrior and Cascade hops. A huge, pitch black ale with notes of pine, citrus, candy sugar, caramel and chocolate.

Draft... almost black with a big medium tab head, good... aroma of light molasses, black licorice, roast and yeast, needs to be stronger, but solid... tastes much more assertive, lots of roast with grass, yeast, candi sugar.. Interesting take on a bipa, solid and worth trying ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Haymarket. Pours a deep black with a tan head that is very persistent. The nose is remarkably muted. Some faint fruity notes and light white pepper, a suggestion of roast? I’m struggling to pull aroma out of this one. On tasting, surprisingly bland with a weird ester profile that conflicts with the faint hops. This is why you don’t use Warrior hops for anything besides bittering. Some light roast. I don’t understand where this idea came from, it doesn’t work for me.

Draft at Haymarket. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma has some orange citrus peel, licorice and chocolate malt. Flavors are sweet raisin, licorice, brown sugar, iced coffee, oranges and piney hip notes. Thin body. Not terrible but it does come off too thin, messy, too sweet, and boozy at times.

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Post Engagement Photos. Pours a rich blackish opaque hue, roasty and dark with a frothy brownish head atop, thicker film lingers on with good lacing and girth. Aromas are a melange of flavors: roast and cocoa meet toffee, coffee, some Belgian yeastiness offers touches of fruit and a boatload of hops offers citrusy melange of grapefruit, lemon, and florals. As it warms, more touches of the Belgian influence come forward, fruity and dark with a good hop presence. Initial is fuller bodied, offering some girthiness with good roast and toast, some cocoa, quickly moving into touches of fruit and yeast, mellow plum and prune, some dry florals and citrusy hops splash into play. Middle gets a touch sweet, finish leaves some good toast and dried maltiness, fresh dark fruit, touches of cocoa, and a decent to sufficient dry floral and citrusy touch that lingers on. Touches of dry cocoa and coffee, roasty malts mix with the hops, which even show a tropical bent at times. A touch sweet in the middle, faint marshmellow and caramel. Dries up more into the finish. Some traces of alcohol, but fairly well hidden for such a big beer. I enjoyed this, the Belgian influence was a bit heavy for personal tastes, but overall, I think it’s a great beer.

Draft sample. Poured clear black color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted malt and complex hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate toasted bittersweet flavor with a moderate bittersweet finish of medium duration. Very good brew that I shared with a freind.

Tap at the brewpub on Dec. 6, 2011. Super dark pour with a brownish head. Very roasty and hoppy, but well balanced. Good stuff.
