COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark malty ale is brewed with loads of English Chocolate malt, a touch of dark crystal and a hefty amount of Amarillo hops - creating a complex and delicious ale with hints of chocolatecovered mandarin oranges. Shoeless Joe and Judge Landis would agree on this one

Draft sample. Poured dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate chocolate and roasted coffee aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet coffee flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Solid drinkable brew that I would recommend to a freind.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours near black with a brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a lot of roasted malts, with dark grains, chocolate and a hint of dryness. Flavor is heavy with roasted malts and has a bit of chocolate with a dry finish.

Pour from a growler the night before MWBBF at Perennial- thanks to the Haymarket manager for sharing it with us. Pours a dark, nearly opaque brown with a small off-white head. Big toasty malts and chocolate on the nose, with some earth and nuts. The flavor isn’t much different; really toasty and chocolaty, with earth, brown sugar, and nuts. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a toasty mouthfeel. Solid porter.

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a near opaque blackish hue, some brown thrown in and a ruby bottom. Cakey brownish head stays as a sturdy film, ok lacing overall. Aromas are roast and cocoa, offering firm dry and bittersweet chocolate, some caramel and toffee, toast, and oranges. Touches of florals, with a chocolate covered orange essence. Fruity and chocolatey. Initial is thinner bodied than expected, a Summer Porter perhaps, with a nice blast of cocoa, sweet and bittersweet mingle, some light roast, more cocoa, touches of toast, faint sweeter caramel grows a bit. Showing some light fruity orange and grapefruit Amarillo hopping influence, a light bitterness from the florals and hops grow on the backend, melding into the dry cocoa and roasty essence. A lot of chocolate in this thing, but not a heavy malt body by any means. A touch of anise, creamy sweeter body grows a bit more as I get further in, staying more chocolatey, with more oranges, touches of gumballs from the Amarillo. I didn’t find this all that appeal up front, but further into the glass it really grows on me. Quite drinkable, a nice palate experience. The hops start to grow a bit more up front, graperfruit and oranges. By the end, I was a believer.

Tap at the brewpub. Very dark pour with a clingy head. Bold chocolate, light smoke, full yet easy drinking palate. Great stuff.

Draft, pours black with tan head. Aroma has a wonderful big pine and hop resin and hint of orange citrus meshing well with a big roasty and chocolate malt beer. Flavors are very hoppy, juicy citrus and pine, lots of chocolate and coffee roast, earthy rye throughout with a long ashy and bitter finish. Full body. Really comes off more like a hoppy stout but whatever loads of amarillo in dark beer tends to work for me!

Draft at Haymarket. Pours a deep brown, nearly black with a tan head. Nose is nice, citrusy hops and fresh. Cocoa roast comes across as well. On taste, nice full flavor, mildly hoppy and a touch sweet. Cocoa really dominates here with a firm bitterness that balances and helps to dry it out. Finishes on the sweeter side. Pretty damn good porter, really.

Blacksox porter. 4oz sample at the source... Pours a darker stout pour with a creamy light beige head... Cocoa chocaltey nose although hard to place the hops .. roasty chocolate flavors with a medium sweetness along with an earthy coating feel in the mouth. Very light hoppy feel at the very end... Medium bodied. Solid porter. 7/4/8/4/14

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black body with a finger-width, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is pretty solid. Nice English toffee and caramel with a good amount of chocolate. Well hopped with a light orange-pine and earth mix as well as a solid roast. Flavor is similar. Nicely hopped and roasted with a solid chocolate and caramel/toffee balance. Bittersweet cocoas up front with some orange pines and florals as well as some earth. Malts offer a thin and light sweetness before this ends with a moderate hop and roast bitterness that dries and leaves a lengthy aftertaste with a nice, light chocolate. Medium-light, somewhat creamy and smooth body with a soft, moderate carbonation. Very easy drinking and clean throughout. Overall, a really nice, fairly hoppy, well balanced porter with lots of bitter cocoas. Solid beer.
