A huge 13% Barley Wine aged for 6 months in Woodford Reserve barrels with zest from a whole case of lemons. It took Bieber all day to zest them!

4oz draft at the brewpub. I was really hoping for some lemon but I was disappointed. No discernible lemon aspect. This was the first beer I tried and could not pick it out. I just got a very boozy disorganized barleywine. Boozy and sweet malt nose with an astringent and thinned out flavor. It just drowned out any potential lemon flavor. Lifeless looking, low carbonation. Thick with no clarity and amber/brown in color.

draft... came back to this for a couple pours, a hint of lemon shines on the aroma and taste at first, as you drink, it disappears but this is still outstanding

Draft at Haymarket, pours hazy bronze with white head. Aroma has lemon zest, caramel, charred barrel and coconut. Flavors of caramel, toasted coconut, vanilla, charred bourbon barrel, and perhaps the slightest lemon finish. Really good barrel aged barley wine but the lemons are a fail here as it doesn’t come through much.

Draft at Haymarket. Pours a murky brownish amber with a thin head. Nose is quite boozy. Lots of bourbon and coconut with a faint citrus punch in the back end. Vanilla as well. On tasting, blast of booze here, both bourbon notes and beer ethanol. The light lemon note seems to cut through the sweetness somewhat, but overall the lemon is pretty light. Not sure I like the Woodford barrels for this barleywine. Still a pretty interesting beer overall.

4 oz pour on tap at the brewpub event (Chicago, IL). Late night stop. Pours a rich amber glowing hue, some sunset orange glow onto the edges with a frothy whitish head that films well, laces well. Aromas push rich barrel, coconut and vanilla, wet oak and lively lemon zest, touches of rind, caramel, toffee, touches of marmalade are gentle. Sticky, sweet with a lively lemon zest punch provides interesting contrast. Initial is lemony up front, the zest gives some definite character on the palate, tart and lively mixing into sweet sticky malts. Toffee, caramel, gentle dried fruit, light oranges. A healthy barrel presence of coconut, vanilla, and Bourbon spirit really works into the fold. Touches of lemon cookies, more oak and barrel, coconut, vanilla, touches of caramel stick. Lemon is a bit refreshing on the finish, sticks around and definitely provides an interesting element. However, I’d prefer just the base here as the lemon interferes a bit further in, dry and a bit medicinal/cough syrupy in parts. Both are pretty good, but I’ll stick with the base.. Interesting treatment, a touch bitter into the finish..
