From notes. First reviewed 9/14/2011. Poured from a 64 oz. growler into a tulip. Thanks for picking this up Dunt!
Each pour is black all the way through, with a creamy tan head that forms and fades away.
The smell has creamy undertones to it. Smooth roasted malt, chocolate, oak, bourbon, and vanilla are all noticeable in the aroma. Lightly smokey.
The flavor starts out with full chocolate and roasted malt. Oak and bourbon come in next, with vanilla and a little bit of espresso coming in at the end. The different components of the flavor blend together well.
This has a full, rich, and creamy feel with carbonation to match. As the bourbon manifests itself in the flavor, the feel dries out just a little bit on the back end.
This is a nice creation from Haymarket. I would not describe it as being terribly innovative, but anytime a brewer can brew a 12.5% bourbon barrel aged imperial stout that feels easy to drink, that is noteworthy.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and frothy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is bourbon chocolate and vanilla with some roast, caramel, and oak. This has a very pleasant sweetness that is balanced well with the roast and bourbon. Flavor is similar. Sweeter chocolate and caramel up front with a nice bourbon character. Some vanilla and a nice roast in the middle with a light oak. Finishes very well balanced with a nice sweetness, roast, and vanilla-oaky bourbon. Lengthy aftertaste following a pretty full, smooth body with a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall a solid barrel aged imperial stout. Nice base with a nice barrel character that balances the sweetness well. Good beer.

On tap at Haymarket after Fobab. Pours black with dark tan head. Aromas of rich chocolate, nice amount of bourbon, deep roasted malts, some toffee, and a little booze. Flavors of fudge, vanilla, bourbon, some heat from the booze, and a little caramel. Nice thick sweet and bourbony finish. Real nice stout.

A deep dark stout with a thick collapsing lacing light brown head. In aroma, smooth molasses, chocolate, with vanilla, bourbon barrel, quite nice if simple. In mouth, a smooth sweet chocolate with nice roasted notes, mocha coffee, vanilla notes and warming alcohol. On tap at brewpub, Nov. 11 2011.

Oh Lordy, this is a good one... very aromatic beer with hints of chocolate, vanilla, coconut, coffee, cherry and bourbon. A specialty beer that only Master Brewer Peter Crowley could come up with. This beer is very dark, and sits nicely in a 12 oz. glass. At first you will taste sthe chocolate and coffee flavors, then you are overwelmed with whiskey bourbon, vanilla and cherry flavors that will send you reeling. A full-bodied beer that will make you come back for more!

On tap: The aroma consists of chocolate, maple syrup, vanilla, and a touch of roasted coffee. It’s a dark brown with no transparency and a small beige head that leaves behind some nice webbing for lacing. The flavor starts with a lot of chocolate and light caramel. The finish has moderate maple syrup, coconut, light vanilla, bourbon, and a touch of wood. Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, right up my alley with a BA Imperial Stout with maple syrup flavors.

Black with lasting creamy tan head. Nose of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, molasses. Sweet and sticky. Good carbonation, maybe a touch thin for the style, but not really a detractor unless you have trouble stopping yourself as the ABV is well hidden. The heat and boubon-forward nature of this beast has mellowed considerably since the first release a couple months ago. Vanilla, bourbon, oak, chocolate all play together exceptionally well. This beer is all grown up. Excellent.

Thanks to NobleSquirrle for putting us on to this at GABF 2011. Pours a black color with some brown shades, a small white head. The aroma is rich sour mash, some dark fruit, chocolate and smoke. The flavor is awesome; brown sugar, huge bourbon, dark fruit especially plum, very rich and tasty. Again, I get a slight sour mash here that I love. Awesome!
