The midnight hour is upon us! Named after the first play ever to be reviewed by a Chicago publication in the 1800s, this dark big brew is made with loads of English Chocolate malt and a touch of Amarillo hops. Hey, sometimes you get a bad review. Get over it, move on and let Midnight Hour help!

Sampler at the bar. Cappuccino foam over a black body, of course. Smell has creamy cocoa, then coffee.Taste has ballsy chocolate roast malt, but no harshness. A blast of citrus hop, then what? A creamy taste despite some busy CO2 bubbles. Cherry cordial chocolate at the end. Yes.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing throughout. Aroma is sweeter with lots of rich chocolates, a nice and soft floral hopping, a light roast, some caramel, and a bit of a citrus aspect to the hops. Flavor is somewhat thin, but very tasty. Lots of dark cocoas with a more distinct roast and some earthy hops. A light citrusy orange, florals, and some toffee sweetness. Finishes with a solid mix of cocoa, roast, earth, and a light, but distinct citrus hopping that leaves a dry, medium-light bitterness and a lengthy aftertaste. Light-medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall, a bit thin at times, but a very tasty porter. Lots of cocoa, roast, and all-around sweetness with a solid hop bitterness that is distinct, but remains somewhat subtle. This was a nice mix between sweet, soft, and bold.

On tap at the brewpub/restaurant, and chose the 12oz. serving to a goblet. The color was black/brown, with decent, deep tan, bubbly head foam, and good cling to the etched-like lacing. The aroma was roasty, with cocoa up front, coffee taking a secondary position, and a hint of char. The flavor added noticeable hop bitterness, rounded by some smooth malt content. With a medium+ body, the hop notes lingered nicely into the finish with some dryness in accompaniment.

On tap; pour is nice dark brown. Frothy tan head that retains modestly. Appearance is perhaps the strong suit here. Typical roasty coffee and chocolate aromas. This brew is a bit thin for my liking, however. Cocoa, chocolate, coffee, licorice; well. I was a bit underwhelmed.

Very dark with a touch of mahogany if the light hits it just right. Nose of chocolate, molasses, dark fruits and a touch of smoke. More of the same in taste with medium-heavy body and a hint of tobacco. I would put this up against any porter around. Excellent.

On tap at haymarket... Pours a rich porter/stoutish pour with a creamy light khaki head... Roast and chocolate in the nose comes out first, cocoa in the background... Flavors are standard porter style with a nice bready roast and chocolate overtone. Thn to medium mouthfeel yet fluffy. Prob nicest offering this time around.

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a nice opaque blackish brown hue, dark and ominous, a decent tannish gray head dies to a good ring, laces well. Aromas are significant dark cocoa, bakers chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, touches and flourishes of American hops, some bitter florals and citrus. Big cocoa, with coffee, chocolate covered orange, bitter dry hops. Initial is medium bodied, big blasts of cocoa, dry and roasty with some mellow sweetness, some toffee, caramel, bittering American hops with citrus rind. Orange, grapefruit, dry hops, bitter cocoa. Really nice, not too big but still quite flavorful. Lingering cocoa, touches of dark fruit, good sturdy hopping and dryness keep the sweet malts at bay. Solid. A LOT of chocolate, could use a little more heavy handed hopping

draft at haymarket, pours of black with beige head. aroma is really chocolatey, coffee grounds. flavor has a big chocolate and coffee roast, astringent bitter roast.

Draft at Haymarket. Pours black with a firm tan head. Nose is full of cocoa and soft floral hop notes a hint of ash is in there as well. On taste, a very charcoal type note dominates. I get the theory of using chocolate malt and patent malt, but it seems a bit hollow an lacking punch. Has a pleasant hoppiness to it but needs a bit moe to bring it to life. Still, a decent enough beer. 8-4-6-3-14
