3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, USA - JUN 3, 2011
Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a healthy deeper amber pour, light haze, good glow of orange sunfire with a frothy offwhite decent sized head that dies to an ok film. Aromas are caramel and toffee mixed into orange and fruity hops, touches of peach and tropical, with bready and doughy malts, grass and florals. A mellow sweetness with decent hop notes on the nose, a bit weak with touches of sweeter malts peaking through pretty well. Initial is medium bodied preaching oranges, citrusy hops, grass, and florals. Some sweeter biscuits and toffee, though dry on the backend with a touch of carmelization. Some tropical and lemony hops with a touch of sweetness. Really, a good deal of orange and biscuits and toast. A bit tamer, yet tasty. Dry bitter soapy and floral finish really starts to linger on, dry and almost resinous on the palate with sweet lingering toffee, biscuits, and a touch of orange marmalade. Not my favorite of Pete’s hoppy beers, but drinkable and with a bitterness that does grow to a potent bite over time. It’s not a heavy IPA, but it’s got some malt substance with a still solid hoppy dry bitter quality that picks up strength further into the beer. A nice Chicago IPA, a bit more grounded and lacking on aroma.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 NobleSquirrel (2677) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUN 2, 2011
Draft at Haymarket. Pours an attractive gold with orange at the edge. Nose is very resiny with strong notes of apricots & peaches. As it warms, lends more to the piney resins. Some light malt character is present in the nose as well. On taste, strongly bitter, lightly astringent. Lots of fruity hops that are kind of subdued by the bitterness present. A pretty solid IPA overall, just needs to have a bit of smoothness/less bitterness to really shine.
