This unique and drinkable pale ale is brewed with almost all Vienna malt and hopped with warrior, willamette and crystal.

Named for the Austrian writer Karl Kraus and his biting satirical newspaper, "The Torch."

2014 version with 3lbs of Hull Melon hop per barrel: clean golden hue with fading fizzy head and spotty lace. Nice melon and white wine fruity notes. Soft grain background with a chalky finish. The hops are well done but the rest of the beer lacks something.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours a pale golden color with a medium white head that dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, caramel and hops. Light-bodied with flavors of grassy hops, toasted malt and caramel. The finish is mildly bitter with an herbal hops aftertaste. Decent overall.

Cloudy amber pour with hardly any head. Aroma is a little like a sweat sock. Some citrus and dark sugar. Mouth is medium bodied. Taste is sweet with caramel. Hop forward finish. Slightly grassy.

ROGUE (2145) - Newark, Delaware, USA - SEP 27, 2012
On tap at brewpub. Pours a light golden color with a one finger creamy white foam head that settles to a thin cap. Aroma is fairly mild, with some grassy and floral notes over a caramel and slightly buttery malt base. Taste is buttery biscuit, with light citrus and grassy hops. Pleasant but mild bitterness in the finish. Finish is slightly sticky, with some resinous hops lingering with the aftertaste. Medium carbonation, and chewy medium body.

Sampled from the tap at the Mundelin craft beer festival. Pours a golden yellow with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a nice pine hop note with a backing grass note as well as underlying sweet grains. Flavor is a bit more dank with a dank grass note with a bit of earth grain backing.

The torch pale ale 5,5%. Pours clear amber with a white head leaving lace. Aroma is heavy malty, piny, grapefruits, soapy and grassy. Favor is similar to aroma, great bitterness and malty body plus sweet. Finishes bitter malty.

Draft... Murky dark straw, not a fan Iíve the colors, hardly any head... Dead aroma... Tastes like a generic pale ale, very bitter, sawdust with grass, alcohol finish.... Pass ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Haymarket. This was the best of the stuff on tap this visit. Pours a pale gold with a fluffy white head. The nose is hop forward, some melon and tangerine notes supported by the biscuity malt notes. On tasting, clean and fresh, balanced between the bitterness and malt. Bitterness is on the soft side, yet firm. More of the melon notes, likely from the willamette. Really nice APA, this one.

Draft at hay, pours clear light yellow with white head. Aroma has good piney and grapefruit notes. Flavor is pretty simple, just a clean and stiff bitter grapefruit rind, grass, and some spicy backend. Clean and good yeast production here. Perhaps not the best hop choices but I still enjoy this on a lot.

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Post Engagement Photos. Pours a nice lightly hazed orange amber hue, glows well with a nice haze, lively carbonation with a decent sized offwhite head that dies to small layer, light lacing. Aromas are pretty light overall, touches of pale malts and cereal grains mix with some light lemon and florals, gentle citrusy grapefruit, grass. Fairly clean on the nose, pushing a little further into oranges and tangerines. Initial is lighter bodied, offering crisp cereal grains, pale malts and a healthy blast of lemony and floral hops up front for the size of the beer. Grass, touches of fruitiness. More oranges, some pale malts, gentle bread and grains. Fairly clean, a touch soapy and floral into the middle where it cleans up pretty well, dried up finish. Fairly simple but very drinkable. Could use a touch more on the flavoring hops, but doesnít seem like that is what itís going for.
