COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This huge, straw colored lager may make you eager to argue or fight! Brewed with imported Pilsen, Munich, and carapils malts; hopped with Tettnang and Willamette; lagered at 50 degrees; dry-hopped with more Willamette; then stored near freezing for 5 weeks! Yes it’s basically a hoppy malt liquor, but who’s judging?

Draft at Haymarket. Pours a deep gold with a sticky white head, some haze. Nose is big and hoppy/spicy, along with pilsner malt and faint alcohol. On tasting, big bitterness and dry. Has a good malt backing but there is some bite here. Sharp alcohol noted. Really clean and far from sweet. About as good as you could expect an Imperial pils to be, imo.

Small pour on tap at the brewpub (Chicago, IL). Pours a pale straw hue, yellowish and light. A kiss of haze, pale body and pale glowing edges. Frothy white head dies to a film that coats and laces well. Aromas offer touches of straw, dust, and bread dough. Gentle sweet grainy malts, kiss of florals and an earthy hop waft. Mellow, I wouldn’t call it sweet, perhaps touches of straw, some grain, and gentle earthy spicy hopping show as it warms. Initial is light bodied, pretty smooth up front with touches of straw, dough, and bread. Gentle grass, hay, and mellow earthy hopping. A bit thin, but for the style it never gets big and brooding ABVwise. Middle gets a touch of dry, grainy, kiss of spice. Really clean profile into the backend, mellow and quite crushable. It’s not complex, and doesn’t offer a ton of flavor like a lot of messy 10% ABV American Imperial Pils. Gentle dryness, almost an herbal waft at times. Finish is gentle dryness, mellow straw, grass. Earth, a bit of grain. Dry yet mellow finish. Not bad. Again, not at all what I was expecting. Nose could use a bit of oomph.

Draft at hay. Pours clear straw yellow white head. Aroma has sweet grain, honey, and florals and spicy hops. Flavors have a strong sweet corny and grain character, spicy and floral hopping. Really over the top. While not as bad as a lot of offenders of this style but still meh.
